About the role
The Employment Law Section (ELS) Deputy Attorney General IV position involves handling complex civil employment cases, including drafting and arguing motions, interviewing witnesses, conducting and defending depositions and other discovery, preparing and arguing summary judgment motions, expert discovery, and preparing for trial. Responsibilities also include handling jury and bench trials, contested administrative evidentiary hearings, defending agency administrative actions, drafting appellate briefs, and obtaining work safety and gun violence restraining orders. Additionally, deputies communicate with clients, provide training, guidance, and advice to state agencies, and interact with judges, court staff, juries, and witnesses.
Responsibilities
- Independently handle all aspects of complex civil employment cases
- Handle jury and bench trials
- Handle contested administrative evidentiary hearings before the State Personnel Board
- Defend agency administrative actions against petitions for writs of mandamus
- Draft appellate briefs and argue before the Courts of Appeal and Ninth Circuit
- Obtain work safety and gun violence restraining orders
- Communicate with clients, including providing detailed case analyses and recommendations
- Provide training, guidance, and advice to state agencies on a variety of employment and personnel matters
- Communicate with judges, court staff, juries, and witnesses
- Work cooperatively, professionally, and effectively with colleagues, opposing counsel, and clients
Requirements
You must reside in California and be active members in good standing of the California State Bar. Additional requirements include a LiveScan check, being an active member of the California State Bar, and passing the appropriate examination for the DAG series.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include at least 6 years of legal experience and active membership in good standing with the California State Bar. Civil litigation experience in California state or federal courts, excellent legal research skills, and experience drafting and arguing pre-trial motions are desirable.
Skills
Desirable skills include excellent written advocacy skills, ability to interview witnesses, clear communication with clients, colleagues, and court personnel, and experience presenting testimony and advocating at hearings before administrative bodies, trial courts, and appellate courts.

Pay
The starting salary for this position is $11,993.00 - $16,096.00 per month, depending on experience.
Schedule
Deputies may largely choose to telework or come into the office, at their option. In-office attendance may be required for meetings, court appearances, or other operational reasons. Deputies are expected to be able to report to the office if an urgent need arises and are expected to be available for meetings and to respond to emails and phone calls during regular business hours.
