Employee Benefits Tax Manager
Job Description
This role leads the preparation, review, and filing of Form 5500 series returns (including applicable schedules/attachments and related filings) and Forms 990 and 990-T (including for Large Pension Trusts with Unrelated Business Income Tax and VEBA Trusts (501(c)(9))). This includes coordinating with clients, auditors, and internal teams to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant submissions. Reviewing all State unrelated business income tax filings and related compliance deliverables, ensuring accurate reporting and coordination of deliverables to provide excellent client service. Researching and resolving exempt organization tax issues. Identifying and implementing tax planning opportunities. Coaching, mentoring, and developing staff, including reviewing work, providing actionable feedback, and supporting professional growth through technical and non-technical training and day-to-day guidance. Participating in internal and external learning, such as webinars, technical updates, and practice initiatives, to remain current and share knowledge with the team.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
- CPA license, JD or Masters of Science in Taxation is required
- At least 5 years of prior experience working in the tax department of a public accounting, with experience leading multiple engagements and supervising staff
- Excellent analytical and technical tax skills
- Knowledge of 990, 990-T and 5500 returns
- Knowledge and expertise related to Unrelated Business Income Taxation of exempt organizations and pension trusts
- Exceptional client service and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to develop and maintain outstanding client relationships
- Ability to manage multiple engagements and competing projects in a rapidly growing, fast-paced, interactive, results-based team environment
- Strong leadership, training, and mentoring skills, coupled with excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills to represent the Firm well to client’s management
- Excellent analytical, organizational, project management skills, and strong attention to detail
Benefits
The compensation range for this position is $105,000–$190,000 and varies by location for candidates residing in California, New Jersey, New York City, Maryland, Pennsylvania, or Washington. For candidates residing in these states, salary will vary based on candidate's location. In addition to the base compensation, Withum offers a competitive benefits package and bonus program (for eligible roles) based on individual and firm performance.
