About the Role

Under direct supervision, assist physicians and nurses with examination, treatment, and special procedures. Apply splints to patients as authorized by the Chief of Orthopedic Department, and perform related patient care duties in the clinic, holding ward, or Emergency Room following established policies, routines, practices, and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with therapeutic and diagnostic patient care functions, including sterile techniques such as removal/application of dressings and splints, wound cleansing/irrigation, and prepping.
  • Explain standard self-care procedures and orient patients to Medical Center policies and practices.
  • Provide assistance in the emergency room with diagnostic examinations by positioning and draping patients, and assist during minor surgical procedures.
  • Assist with special procedures such as peritoneal lavage, lumbar punctures, thoracotomy, and thoracentesis; organize treatment areas prior to procedures.
  • Answer incoming phone calls and take appropriate action.
  • Perform closed heart massage (CPR).
  • Perform 12-lead EKGs on patients as directed and download EKGs into the Muse system.
  • Obtain complete vital signs and clothing lists for patients.
  • Issue and adjust crutches and canes, and instruct patients in proper walking techniques as authorized by the Chief of Orthopedic Department.
  • Apply basic splints for fractures/sprains under physician instructions using appropriate materials.
  • Coordinate instrument cleaning and processing with Central Processing per department process.
  • Pick up and deliver items such as forms, mail, and specimens between departments.
  • Direct and transport patients to appropriate rooms or areas in the ED or Medical Center.
  • Maintain adequate stock of supplies and report needs to the Charge RN.
  • Prepare gurneys/beds, stock patient items, oxygen tank supplies, suction set-ups, gloves, and EKG electrodes in designated areas.
  • Maintain a clean work area, including utility rooms, supply rooms, and ED ramps.
  • Promote, ensure, and improve customer service through skills consistent with the organization’s philosophy of extraordinary customer relations and quality service.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Six (6) months (1,000 hours) of recent experience (within the last two years) in a healthcare/patient contact setting.
  • Proof of successful completion of an anatomy course (from an accredited college, vocational, or adult education) within the last three years; or six (6) months (1,000 hours) of recent (within the last two years) Emergency Room Technician/EMT experience.
  • Successful completion of Kaiser Permanente Orthopedics demonstration/validation of ability to apply all types of splints within the probationary period (maximum of three opportunities).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Schedule

  • Scheduled Weekly Hours: 20
  • Shift: Variable (including on-call)
  • Workdays: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday
  • Working Hours: 12:00 AM – 11:59 PM
  • Job Schedule: Call-in/On-Call

Pay

$28.63 - $31.58 per hour. Kaiser Permanente strives to offer a market-competitive total rewards package and is committed to pay equity and transparency. The posted pay range is based on possible base salaries for the role and does not reflect the full value of the total rewards package. Actual base pay determined at offer will be based on labor market data, internal alignment, and a candidate's years of relevant work experience, education, certifications, skills, and geographic location.
