About the Department

VCU Medical Center is a largely underserved, Level 1 Trauma Center and tertiary referral center seeing over 100,000 patients per year. The department is nationally recognized for innovative management of chest pain, stroke, major trauma, medical management of EMS, and for providing medical direction for aeromedical transport. The Virginia Poison Center is a division of this department.

The VCU Department of Emergency Medicine also provides coverage for a free-standing Emergency Department in New Kent, VA (15,000 patients/year) and community hospitals in Tappahannock, VA (20,000 patients/year) and South Hill, VA (25,000 patients/year). The department houses a 3-year Emergency Medicine residency program, partners with the Air Force to train their residents, and is one of only 12 programs with a combined Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine residency (2 residents per year).

Responsibilities

• Clinical:
  • Provide direct patient care within the emergency department, supervising trainees, non-licensed providers, and non-physician credentialed providers.
  • Deliver efficient, high-quality care reflecting current professional practice norms and utilization guidelines.
  • Document each patient encounter with a timely, comprehensive note.
  • Demonstrate professional and courteous behavior toward patients, staff, and hospital community.
  • Fulfill billing and coding responsibilities as defined in the scope of practice.
  • Adhere to the department’s operational manual, policies, and procedures, as well as hospital rules, medical staff bylaws, and credentialing requirements.
  • Demonstrate willingness to fill uncovered shifts in addition to clinical commitment.
• Teaching:
  • Provide core curriculum lectures to medical students, interns, and resident-level trainees.
  • Participate in ACLS, PALS, and ATLS courses as appropriate.
  • Provide bedside clinical teaching to all trainees in the Emergency Department.
  • Participate in nursing, housestaff, medical student, advanced practice provider, and paramedical educational programs.
• Research:
  • Actively identify areas of interest and participate in departmental research projects.
• Administrative:
  • Attend department staff meetings unless on clinical duty.
  • Participate in and adhere to quality improvement and utilization review activities.
  • Engage in relevant marketing and public relations activities on behalf of the hospital and Emergency Department.
  • Serve on appropriate medical staff and hospital committees as assigned.
  • Complete all reports and requests for information from the Department Chair, Vice-Chair, and School of Medicine in a timely manner.
  • When required, represent the VCU Health System in assignments spanning a full spectrum of healthcare or specific areas of interest.

Requirements

• Board Certified/Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine.
• Active Virginia Medical license or ability to obtain one.
• Completion of an Emergency Medicine Residency within 3 years (if beyond 3 years, must have completed 1500 hours of clinical activity in the past 3 years in an Emergency Department of comparable size, volume, and patient acuity; may be waived at the discretion of the Chair).
• Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds, or a commitment to do so.
