EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN - PART TIME

Part-time Emergency Medical Technician positions available with the San Marcos Fire Department. Positions are on a regular 24-hour shift schedule (40 regular hours plus additional overtime hours). Part-time employees may work up to 999 hours per fiscal year, averaging no more than 20 hours per week as budget allows.

Responsibilities

• Operates ambulances safely; transports patients in accordance with Department Policies and San Diego County Emergency Medical Services Policies and Protocols.
• Responds to emergency medical services (EMS) calls, fire alarms, accidents, hazardous materials incidents, and rescue operations.
• Performs EMS skills within the EMT scope of practice, including BLS assessment, emergency medical care, CPR, bandaging, splinting, and other procedures as directed by San Diego County EMS policies.
• Prepares written reports and maintains confidential medical records.
• Participates in quality assurance/quality improvement programs.
• Cleans and maintains fire stations, vehicles, and equipment; performs preventative maintenance.
• Inspects and maintains fire hydrants.
• Participates in drills, training, and public education programs.
• Studies and stays current on City geography, department rules, and EMS protocols.
• Creates pre-fire plans and special area response maps.
• Operates emergency medical equipment, radio/telephone systems, and personal protective equipment.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

• Knowledge of EMT scope of practice, EMS procedures, California vehicular laws, and fire-based EMS delivery systems.
• Familiarity with the geography and street layout of San Marcos and surrounding areas.
• Ability to perform under pressure, make rapid judgments, and work effectively in stressful situations.
• Strong customer service skills and ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
• Physical endurance and agility to work in all weather conditions for prolonged periods.
• Awareness and appreciation of cultural diversity within the community.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Six months of EMT experience preferred but not required.
• Completion of State Fire Marshal Firefighter I Academy (348 hours or equivalent) preferred but not required.
• Valid California Class C Driver License (Ambulance driver endorsement not required).
• Current DMV driving report (must be submitted with application).
• Valid EMT-I certification as defined by the State of California, Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA).
• Must be accredited as an EMT-I in San Diego County by time of appointment.
• Valid CPR Certificate/Card (minimum of healthcare provider).
• No Federal or State felony convictions.
• Must remain a nonsmoker throughout employment (applies to hires after July 1, 1992).
• Must live within the Department residency boundary within one year of appointment (San Diego, Riverside, Orange, or Los Angeles counties).
