Responsibilities
- Demonstrate performance according to expectations and standards set by the position description.
- Build collaborative relationships with MWHC/ED staff, nursing, and physicians through verbal communication and accurate documentation.
- Assist nurses in collecting patient data and specimens.
- Perform designated patient care procedures to support nurses and medical staff.
- Participate in the unit and MWHC infection control plan and performance improvement process.
- Assist the Manager with Regulatory Readiness as needed.
- Participate in the unit risk management plan.
- Demonstrate effective communication, customer service, and team-building skills.
- Take responsibility for professional growth, development, and regulatory/education requirements at the department level.
- Maintain licensure or certifications required for the position during employment.
- Perform clerical responsibilities using the hospital’s information systems.
- Facilitate communication between diagnostic/testing areas, patient care areas, and families.
- Answer patient call lights and communicate requests to appropriate personnel immediately.
- Respond to and carry out patient and family requests when appropriate.
- Serve as a customer-friendly unit receptionist for associates, physicians, patients, families, and visitors.
- Facilitate physician and department consults until completion.
- Maintain a safe and orderly environment.
- Coordinate equipment and supply needs in collaboration with the Supply Agent.
- Assist with cleaning and maintaining equipment; notify appropriate departments of malfunctions.
- Initiate emergency procedures as directed.
- Perform additional duties as needed, including those of other care team members.
- Perform Communication Coordinator duties as needed.
- Perform venipuncture and start IVs.
- Conduct phlebotomy and specimen collection with proper labeling and transporting.
- Apply cardiac monitors where appropriate and perform 12-lead EKGs.
- Set up sterile trays for suturing and sterile procedures.
- Insert Foley catheters when appropriate and document intake and output.
- Perform splinting and/or application of orthopedic adjuncts per physician orders.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Current Virginia State EMT Certification and/or National Registry required.
- AHA BLS Provider CPR certification required at hire.
- One (1) year of EMT, military corpsman, or clinical-related experience preferred.
- AHA ACLS and PALS certifications preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Constant (67-100% of workday) walking, standing, use of arms and hands.
- Frequent (34-66% of workday) bending, stooping, kneeling, and squatting.
- Ability to lift 35 lbs. and push/pull 20 lbs.
- Auditory and visual skills, including color determination.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and reach overhead.

- Ability to multi-task and communicate effectively with a multi-disciplinary team.
- Capacity to cope with difficult situations and tolerate irregular hours, including evenings, nights, and weekends.
Environmental Requirements
- Potential risk of exposure to radiation and toxic chemicals.
- Potential for exposure to bloodborne pathogens; must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
Pay
$20.91 - $29.28 per hour.
