Emergency Generator Technician

Sign-on bonus of $4,668 available for the successful applicant, paid in two installments: $2,334 within 30 days of hire date and $2,334 twelve months after hire date.

About the role

This recruitment is for two Facility Maintenance Technician – Mechanical Trade – Journey positions. The role is in the Life Safety maintenance area of Building Services, focusing on emergency generators and transfer switches across campus.

This position requires journey-level proficiency in multiple trades, including Electrical, Mechanical, and Vehicle/Equipment repair. The role involves in-depth analysis and problem-solving of complex building systems, prioritizing critical needs during power outages to restore power to research and medical buildings.

Responsibilities

• Become proficient with all manufacturers of emergency generators and transfer switches on campus.
• Perform journey-level tasks in electrical, mechanical, and vehicle/equipment repair trades.
• Troubleshoot and repair three-phase electrical circuits up to 4000A and 480V, including use of multi-meters, power monitoring equipment, and replacement of electronic control boards.
• Install and repair electrical raceways and conductors to support maintained systems.
• Comply with the University's Arc Flash requirements.
• Understand and manage load shedding, control systems, and programming for generators serving multiple buildings, including balancing KW load and ensuring critical loads (e.g., fire pumps) are maintained.
• Maintain diesel fuel delivery systems, including electronic/digital and mechanical controls, and rework complex systems for reliability.
• Perform inspection, testing, and maintenance of diesel fire pump engines in accordance with NFPA 20 and NFPA 25.
• Conduct preventive maintenance and repair of small engine equipment, such as portable generators, pressure washers, blowers, and gas-operated saws.
• Repair heavy equipment, including backhoes and skid steers, with strong mechanical knowledge of hydraulics.
• Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as changing motor oil, antifreeze, hydraulic fluids, cleaning equipment, painting, and maintaining a clean shop area and service vehicle.
• Respond to emergencies during weather events.
• Use electronic principles and specialized test equipment to design, install, program, test, and troubleshoot complex interconnected systems.
• Apply knowledge of plumbing installation methods and hydrodynamics.

Requirements

• Valid NC Driver’s License or ability to obtain one prior to hire date.
• Basic mechanical understanding of two-stroke engines, four-stroke engines, and mechanical pumps.
• Strong knowledge of hydraulics and plumbing installation methods.
• Working knowledge of NFPA 20 and NFPA 25 standards.
• Ability to work independently and make critical decisions during power outages.
• Willingness to perform hands-on maintenance tasks, including cleaning, painting, and fluid changes.
