Emergency Dept Tech - Part Time (24 hrs/week) - 7a - 7p

Schedule

This role will work Shift 1 (7 a.m.–7 p.m.) in two twelve-hour shifts per week.

Responsibilities

• Assists in evaluating nursing care by comparing the patient’s functional status from hour to hour and discussing this with the nurse.
• Documents findings, interventions and patient outcome results on patient documents (I&O, VS, bladder scanner results, pulse ox results, glucometer results, etc.) using complete signature in Penn Chart.
• Promotes infection control by using appropriate hand washing techniques.
• Transports patients to diagnostic testing or other patient care areas; certified ED Technicians may transport stable telemetry patients per hospital policy.
• Follows standard and isolation precautions; maintains a safe environment and protects the patient from injury.
• Applies and monitors patients in restraints per policy and medical order.
• Observes or monitors behavior/health state and responses to therapy (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, height and weight, etc.).
• Performs patient care rounds per unit policy and participates in staff and unit council meetings.
• Reports findings to the nurse concerning the patient and/or family that may impact patient care.
• Performs or assists with activities of daily living: bathing, grooming, eating, feeding, range of motion, ambulating, transferring, oral hygiene.
• Participates in prevention and treatment of skin breakdown; applies heat and cold therapy as directed.
• Provides for oral dietary needs and elimination needs (bed pan, urinal, emptying appliances, bowel program); assists with colostomy irrigations; applies urosheath/condom catheter.
• Removes Foley catheter as directed and monitors urinary output; administers cleansing enemas as ordered; performs postmortem care.
• Assists the physician with physical exams; assists with oxygen therapy only (does not regulate flow).
• Encourages use of pulmonary toilet (incentive spirometer, coughing, turning, deep breathing).
• Participates in quality monitoring procedures: daily accucheck controls, urine dipsticks controls, clinitek controls; daily code cart checks; resuscitation room checklist every shift.
• Reinforces health care instruction to patients per nurse’s directions.
• Displays competence using pulse oximeter, 12-lead ECG, vital sign machine, glucometer, Foley removal, lift and transfer devices; performs phlebotomy as directed by RN.
• Assists with discontinuing IVs, spinal immobilization (cervical collar and backboard), casting and splinting.
• Assists in setting mutually agreed-upon realistic individual patient goals and integrates the RN’s directions into care.
• Gives RN report before the end of shift and at various times during the shift regarding patient response to care and unusual findings.
• Participates in unit upkeep and cleanliness of the Emergency Department.
• Identifies the patient per hospital policy before carrying out functions; assists with data collection for nursing history and physical (vital signs, height, weight, blood sugar results, point-of-care testing results, functional status) and communicates changes to the RN.
• Participates in respectful communication with patients, families and co-workers; provides patient and family information to the RN for care coordination and discharge planning.
• Observes skin changes and reports discoloration, abrasions, infestations or skin breakdown.
• Receives written/verbal report at the beginning of each shift from the RN regarding care to be delivered or for patients needing constant observation.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Vocational/Technical School/Diploma Program preferred.
• Certified Nursing Assistant (CAN) or matriculating nursing student who has successfully completed clinical rotation preferred.
• EMT or EMT-P preferred.
• BLS from the American Heart Association required.
• At least 2 years related work experience preferred.

Pay

Salary Range: $18.73 – $29.31 per hour. As part of their job offer, successful candidates are provided a specific rate, taking into consideration various factors including experience and education.
