About the role

The emergency department technician plays a crucial role in the health care team, supporting nurses in delivering quality care to patients and families. This position works Shift 1 (11a - 11p).

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates nursing care given and discusses findings with the nurse.
  • Documents findings, interventions, and patient outcomes on patient documents.
  • Promotes infection control by using proper hand washing techniques.
  • Transports patients to diagnostic testing or other patient care areas.
  • Maintains a safe environment and protects patients from injury.
  • Applies and monitors patients in restraints as per policy and medical orders.
  • Observes or monitors patients' behavior and responses to therapy.
  • Performs patient care rounds and participates in staff and unit council meetings.
  • Collaborates with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Reports findings to the nurse concerning the patient and/or family impacting patient care.
  • Assists with activities of daily living, oral dietary needs, and elimination needs.
  • Provides health care instruction to patients according to the nurse's directions.
  • Uses various medical equipment and reports findings to the registered nurse.
  • Performs phlebotomy as directed by the RN.
  • Assists with oxygen therapy and discontinuing medications.
  • Encourages the use of the pulmonary toilet.
  • Participates in quality monitoring procedures.
  • Assists in setting patient goals and integrating the RN's plan of care into the care given.
  • Provides patient and family information to the registered nurse for discharge planning.
  • Ensures accountability and holds self and others accountable to meet commitments.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Vocational/Technical School/Diploma Program preferred.
  • CAN or matriculating nursing student that has successfully completed clinical rotation preferred.
  • EMT or EMPT preferred.
  • BLS from the American Heart Association required.
  • At least 2 years related work experience preferred.
