Emergency Department Technician - Full Time - Midnights

Organization: Henry Ford Rochester Hospital • Department: Emergency • Shift: Night (3 pm–3:30 am) • 36 hours/week • Every third weekend and holiday rotation

About the role

Prepare patients for physical examination by RN and physician. Take and record vital signs in the EMR every 2 hours or more frequently, as directed by RN. Observe and report patient’s condition to RN. Round on all patients in designated area every 30 minutes or more frequently, as designated by RN.

Responsibilities

• Perform patient care duties as prescribed by a physician and as delegated by a Registered Nurse, including:
  • Routine throat cultures
  • Application of oxygen per mask or nasal cannula
  • Administration of enemas
  • Surgical skin preparation
  • Insertion and discontinuation of urethral catheters
  • Initiation and discontinuation of IV therapy under direction of Registered Nurse
  • Application of cardiac monitor
  • Application of simple orthopedic splints and supports
  • Application of sterile dressings
  • Application of antibiotic ointment (except to eyes)
  • Eye irrigations
  • Cleansing and preparation of wounds
  • Oral suctioning
  • EKG
  • Pulse oximeter
  • Obtain laboratory specimens, including blood draw
  • Obtain blood cultures
  • One Touch Blood Glucose Screening
• Record in FirstNet and the patient’s EMR specimen collection, procedures, testing, vital signs, and interventions performed.
• Maintain awareness of emotional needs of patient and family.
• Perform a variety of technical functions, including:
  • Ordering and stocking of supplies
  • Monitoring the expiration dates on sterile supplies
  • Preparation of sterile fields and trays
  • Listing and securing of patient valuables
  • Routine cleaning assignments
  • Assisting the physician during surgical procedures
  • Completion of requests for diagnostic tests
  • Listing of supplies for charging purposes
  • Transportation of patients

Requirements

• Basic reading, writing, and mathematical skills normally acquired through completion of a high school education or GED program.
• One of the following:
  • Emergency Medical Technician certification.
  • Completion of (2) clinical semesters in a school of nursing program.
  • Six (6) months of previous experience in an emergency department in a position that required skills in venipuncture, EKGs, urinary catheterization, knowledge of sterile technique, and splint application in the last two (2) years.
  • CNA with 1–2 years of experience.
