About the Role

The Emergency Department Technician provides care in the Emergency Department (ED) guided by hospital and department policies and procedures under the direction and supervision of nurses and/or Emergency Department providers.

Responsibilities

• Assist licensed personnel in implementing the nursing process in direct patient care.
• Gather appropriate equipment and assist the nurse and/or provider in procedures, including casting, lumbar puncture, thoracotomy, and laceration repair in accordance with hospital and unit policy and procedure.
• Perform CPR in accordance with hospital and unit policy.
• Maintain, clean, and perform quality control of point-of-care testing equipment, including HemoCue (glucose & hemoglobin), mini-UA analyzer, urine pregnancy test, and occult stool.
• Participate and assist in maintaining a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic work environment.
• Participate in patient/family education.
• Maintain department inventories and order supplies as needed.
• Perform, transmit, and log ECGs as ordered.
• Apply splints, assist with cast removal, provide crutch training, apply ace wraps, and perform wound cleansing and dressing applications per provider order.
• Inform biomed/engineering of equipment needing repair, tag broken equipment, and input repair orders into the computer portal system.
• Provide clerical support as needed, including order entry, filing, faxing, and updating the Reddinet system.
• Assemble and maintain medical records according to hospital and unit practice.
• Engage in a high degree of interaction with patients, visitors, and family members to facilitate a positive experience.
• Transport patients.
• Answer telephones and direct calls appropriately.
• Retrieve, review for accuracy, and/or coordinate statistical data to validate the quality of clinical work and patient charges.
• Compile appropriate paperwork for patient transfers according to EMTALA regulations and hospital policy.
• Assist in special projects and assignments.
• May be requested to assist with new hire training.

Skills

• Use time stamp to obtain an accurate time of arrival.
• Ask patients appropriate screening questions at time of arrival.
• Obtain vital signs and report abnormal vital signs to nurses and/or providers.
• Apply continuous pulse oximetry.
• Obtain a visual acuity exam.
• Place patients in the appropriate treatment area under the direction of a nurse or provider.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent required. Current staff must be compliant within 24 months of 3/24/15 revision date.
• Any one of the following: Emergency Medical Technician, Certified Nursing Assistant, military medical training, or currently enrolled in a nursing program; or equivalent experience and education required.

Qualifications

• Current BLS certification.
• Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Certification, initial certification required at first available hospital training class. Annual recertification required.
• Annual Restraint Certification/Competency.
• Annual Joint Commission Review/Competencies required at first available hospital training.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Work often performed under stressful, emotional, and physical conditions.
• May be exposed to contaminated instruments that may cause infections, burns, or cuts.
• May be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation.
• Accepts additional workload during times of unexpected circumstances, e.g., high activity, high census, and sudden emergencies.
• Frequently lifting, pushing, and pulling up to and over 50 lbs; obtaining assistance as required to transport patients, supplies, and required equipment throughout all areas of the hospital and hospital grounds.
