The Level I Trauma Emergency Department at Banner Desert & Children’s Medical Center is dedicated to excellent patient care, quality, and safety. With over 100 beds, our ED serves approximately 150,000 patients annually, including both adult and pediatric populations. We offer unique programs such as a Certified Primary Stroke Center, Acute Chest Pain accreditation, and ACS Trauma Level II.

As an Emergency Department Technician, you will work in a fast-paced environment alongside professional caregivers to provide outstanding customer service to the East Valley. This role involves diverse patient interactions and a wide range of acuity levels.

Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned procedures under general supervision, including electrocardiogram testing (EKG), wound cleansing, vital sign measurements, application of monitor leads, specimen collection, and patient transport.
  • Perform advanced skills (where state statute permits) such as blood glucose testing, phlebotomy, saline lock insertion, IV discontinuation, and bladder (Foley) catheterization for patients twelve years and older.
  • Assist with patient exams and minor surgical or health procedures, including lumbar punctures, sterile field preparation, suturing lacerations, chest tube insertion, closed fracture reduction, gastric lavage, pelvic examinations, restraint application, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Apply orthopedic devices, including pre-manufactured and plaster splints under physician direction.
  • Perform specimen collection and point-of-care testing (e.g., blood glucose, hemoccult, gastroccult) while ensuring accuracy and integrity.
  • Communicate patient condition updates to RNs, physicians, or other providers.
  • Accurately document patient information, vital signs, and procedures in the patient record.
  • Monitor and maintain supply stock levels, medication rooms, exam room bedside carts, and specialty carts.
  • Assist with health unit coordination tasks and reception responsibilities as needed.
  • Attend department meetings and educational sessions; assist in orienting and training new ED Technicians.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Either Emergency Medical Technician–Basic (EMT-B) or higher with state licensure/certification, or Certified Nursing Assistant in the state of practice (required for new hires and transfers).
  • Basic computer skills, effective communication (written and verbal), and problem-solving ability.

Schedule

  • Full-time, evening shift: 3:00 PM – 3:30 AM, 3x12-hour shifts per week.
  • Rotating weekends and holidays required.

Pay

  • Flat rate $1/hour weekend shift differential.
  • 18% night shift differential where applicable.

Banner Desert Medical Center, located on an 80-acre campus in Mesa, Arizona, is one of the state’s largest and most comprehensive hospitals. Banner Children’s Hospital at Desert, within the same campus, is a state-of-the-art facility with over 200 beds. It offers advanced technology such as iCare ICU monitoring and robotic surgery, along with dedicated pediatric rehab, radiology, oncology, and hematology capabilities. The facility includes a 76-bed NICU, 24-bed PICU, six pediatric ORs, and a 22-bed ED.
