About the role

12-week Emergency Department RN Transition to Practice Program tailored to individual learning needs in our Level II Trauma Center. Hands-on nursing experience in assessing, planning, and providing patient care. Successful participants will be placed in a full-time shift position in the Emergency Department. Program starts 9/21/2026.

Manages individualized, outcome-oriented nursing care through the nursing process, coordinating assessment, planning, and care delivery in accordance with departmental and hospital policies.

Responsibilities

  • Medication Administration
    • Demonstrates knowledge of and follows SSH policies for administering, transcribing, and recording medications.
    • Completes medication reconciliation process per SSH policy.
    • Demonstrates proper procedure for narcotic documentation, withdrawal, administration, verification, count, waste, and discrepancy resolution.
  • Plan of Care / Documentation / Patient & Family Centered Care
    • Develops, discusses, and communicates a prioritized problem list and plan of care for each patient.
    • Evaluates and updates individualized plan of care, documenting outcomes.
    • Initiates admission assessment within 8 hours, identifying and documenting teaching needs for patient/family/significant others.
    • Continues assessment/reassessment, identifying care needs within established nursing practice.
    • Documents all patient care following departmental and hospital policies, unit-based standards, disease processes (e.g., CHF, PNA vaccines), and nurse-sensitive indicators (e.g., falls, skin, CAUTI).
    • Assesses and documents patient’s level of comfort using appropriate pain scales and response to interventions (pharmacological and non-pharmacological).
    • Advocates for patient/family, seeking help when they cannot represent themselves, raising ethical concerns, and utilizing available resources.
    • Actively communicates plan of day via whiteboard, updating every shift.
    • Facilitates discharge/transfer by 12:00 PM, communicating barriers using chain of command.
  • Safety / Quality
    • Fosters a "Culture of Safety" through personal ownership and commitment.
    • Verifies patient identification with two identifiers before invasive procedures, care, medication administration, or specimen labeling, including "time out" documentation.
    • Complies with CDC hand hygiene guidelines, universal precautions, and proper use/disposal of personal protective equipment and hazardous materials.
    • Maintains awareness of MSDS sheets and access procedures.
    • Ensures environment meets regulatory requirements.
    • Understands and demonstrates roles in hospital codes and emergency preparedness.
  • Professional Development
    • Assumes responsibility for professional development by incorporating evidence-based practice, research, and performance improvement.
    • Obtains at least 5 contact hours per year in area of practice.
    • Practices within the legal boundaries of the MA Nurse Practice Act.
    • Directs other licensed and non-licensed personnel as assigned.
    • Accepts and responds appropriately to feedback and recommendations for change.
    • Demonstrates professional working relationships with colleagues across disciplines.

    • Analyzes causes of problems, identifies and evaluates alternative solutions, and selects appropriate solutions.

    • Accesses Lotus Notes for email, learning management, and other resources.
    • Uses software applications required by department and unit standards.

    • Complies with applicable policies and procedures.
    • Safeguards the privacy and security of patient information.
    • Adheres to SSH’s privacy and security programs, reporting potential compliance issues to management.
    • Completes mandatory education requirements for compliance, privacy, and security programs.

    • Conveys respect for patient and family values, preferences, and expressed needs.
    • Recognizes and includes the patient and family as important members of the healthcare team according to patient preferences.
    • Collaborates with the patient and family in planning, implementing, and evaluating care.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing (preferred).
  • Previous Acute Care RN experience preferred.
  • Current RN license (Registered Nurse) in Massachusetts.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification (American Heart Association).
  • Depending on department, additional certifications may be required:
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
    • Emergency Response Training
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
    • Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC)
    • Trauma Care After Resuscitation (TCAR)

Pay

Pay Range: $38.20 - $77.39 per hour

Schedule

  • Full-time, budgeted hours: 36 per week.
  • Shift: Evening (1:00 PM – 1:30 AM).
  • Rotating weekends and holidays.
