About the role

Emergency communications specialists play a critical role in making immediate decisions that impact the life, health, and safety of faculty, staff, students, and members of the public. They are responsible for answering and screening incoming calls, evaluating calls for urgency, and coordinating responses with emergency responders.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate phone calls to gather necessary information and determine the nature and severity of incidents.
  • Maintain composure and communicate effectively during stressful situations.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple tasks, including responding to non-emergency requests and managing panic/burglar alarms.
  • Initiate and manage emergency notifications and activate sirens as needed.
  • Access and validate information from various databases to support investigations and provide accurate information.
  • Facilitate non-emergency requests and keep up-to-date with campus events.
  • Operate and monitor communication systems, including two-way radios and sirens.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Knowledge of public safety communication center policies and technology.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and work under pressure.
  • Strong computer skills, including typing and keyboarding.
  • Ability to pass a written examination, interview, background investigation, psychological & polygraph examinations, and medical exam.

Qualifications

  • No criminal record other than minor motor vehicle violations.
  • No credibility issues affecting testimony in court, civil, or administrative hearings.
  • Passes CJIS Security Training and ICS100 and ICS200.

Pay

The starting salary range for this position is $18.39 - $30.27 per hour. Final compensation will be determined based on skills, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

Schedule

This is a full-time position with a flexible schedule to accommodate 24/7 operations.
