We are seeking a full-time Embedded Software Engineer for our corporate locations in Olathe, KS, or Chandler, AZ.

About the role

In this role, you'll work directly with customers to coordinate customized software and hardware solutions. You'll write software in C and Python, configure the flight deck to meet customer requirements, and integrate software for delivery. This position offers a customer-facing opportunity with aircraft Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) alongside software engineering responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Create and execute designs for small sets of new functionalities as part of a software project using C, Python, or other selected languages
  • Utilize software engineering tools such as configuration management systems, build processes, and debuggers in the software development process
  • May perform as a technical leader or Lead Software Engineer for derivative software projects
  • Collaborate and add value through participation in peer code reviews, providing comments and suggestions
  • Provide reliable solutions to a variety of problems using sound problem-solving techniques
  • Perform technical root cause analysis and outline corrective action for given problems
  • Contribute to technical research on new technologies
  • Estimate level of effort, evaluate new options of similar technology, offer suggestions to improve processes, and provide feedback on some electrical design aspects
  • Serve as a mentor to less experienced software engineers (Software Engineer 1)
  • Develop software for safety-critical airframe-specific and airframe-independent functionality
  • Manage OEM relationships, including proactive communication, understanding and advocating for customer requirements, managing feedback, and ensuring expectations are appropriately calibrated with OEM partners
  • Develop and maintain high-quality deliverables for OEMs in alignment with their engineering, flight test, and production schedules
  • Work cross-functionally with Garmin's program coordination, systems, system tests, human factors, and flight operations teams to ensure all aspects of a program are addressed

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Math, Physics, or a related field AND a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
  • Demonstrated proficiency and experience developing moderately complex software in C, C++, Python, or other selected languages
  • Proficient knowledge, utilization, and mastery of relevant software engineering tools (configuration management systems, build processes, debuggers, emulators, simulators, and logic analyzers)

Preferred Qualifications

  • An aviation industry background or pilot license is strongly preferred
  • Defense industry or military background in aviation
  • Customer service-oriented and comfortable interacting directly with customers
