This full-time role embeds a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) within the law school to deliver on-site, culturally responsive mental-health services to law students. The counselor provides direct clinical care, prevention-based psychoeducation, and consultation that address the unique stressors of legal education—including trauma exposure, vicarious trauma, and high-performance expectations—while coordinating with university and community providers and supervising graduate trainees.
Responsibilities
- Provide individual counseling and brief therapy services to law students, including support through the Bar Exam.
- Conduct intake assessments and develop individualized treatment plans.
- Deliver crisis intervention and risk assessment.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation.
- Facilitate group counseling or skills-based groups.
- Develop and present workshops on trauma-informed care, vicarious trauma, self-care, and working with victims of crime.
- Collaborate with faculty to integrate wellness education into the law school environment.
- Promote preventative mental-health programming and reduce stigma.
- Consult with faculty and staff on student mental-health concerns.
- Collaborate with university and community partners.
- Provide guidance on trauma-informed practices.
- Coordinate referrals for psychiatric evaluation and medication services.
- Assist with academic accommodations and support services.
- Serve as liaison to campus and community providers.
- Supervise graduate interns and practicum students.
- Support program development and evaluation efforts.
- Engage in quality-improvement initiatives.
- Maintain compliance with licensing and ethical standards.
- Participate in meetings and professional development.
- Manage caseload and scheduling effectively.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or equivalent field.
- Licensed (or license-eligible) by the appropriate North Carolina mental-health licensure board (e.g., NC Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors, NC Social Work Board). Continued employment contingent upon licensure within 18 months of hire.
- General trauma-treatment certification preferred; trauma-treatment specialist-eligible candidates considered, with continued employment contingent upon completion of training within 18 months of hire.
- Minimum 5 years of full-time experience providing psychotherapy for general mental-health concerns (preferably with young adults) OR minimum 3 years of full-time experience providing trauma-treatment counseling (preferably with young adults).
- Experience with co-occurring mental-health/trauma-survivor populations.
- Experience utilizing evidence-based interventions for the treatment of mental-health concerns.
- Extensive experience providing crisis intervention.
- Supervisory experience desired.
- Experience in higher education or the non-profit sector desired.
- Experience with mandated client populations desired.
- Experience working with substance-use concerns desired.
- Demonstrated competence in group counseling and time-limited individual psychotherapy.
- Demonstrated competence in outreach and prevention program planning and implementation.
Skills
