ELL Instructor-Part time

About the Role

This part-time teaching position supports the mission of Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas by establishing and implementing English Language Learning (ELL) classes for refugees, immigrants, migrants, and community members. The role involves teaching classes, managing student records, assisting with enrollments, and providing classroom and program support. The position requires evening availability and may include weekend hours as needed.

Responsibilities

• Teach 5 to 8 sections of weekly pre-literate to intermediate level ELL classes to adult refugees (classes are 60 to 90 minutes long with up to 15 students per class).
• Work with the Program Coordinator to schedule and enroll new participants into the ELL program via onsite, offsite, and remote sessions.
• Supplement and utilize selected curriculum for both literate and preliterate adults, creating and organizing additional materials for in-person and remote learning.
• Maintain documentation of student data, attendance records, pre- and post-assessment scoring, case notes, and reports in Apricot, G-Drive, and SharePoint databases.
• Support the Program Coordinator and ELL team in training volunteers on curriculum and literacy resources.
• Train students to use public transportation or remote learning platforms to access ELL classes.
• Conduct program services in a culturally sensitive manner and collaborate with internal and external community programs to maintain student participation.
• Communicate regularly with students and their case managers to ensure compliance.
• Maintain an Outlook calendar to organize and coordinate program support and participate in team and departmental meetings.
• Assist with volunteer management, including orientations, trainings, meetings, and tracking volunteer hours.
• Complete duties in various locations, including offices, public meeting spaces, and client homes (driving within the service area may be required).
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Classroom teaching experience; experience teaching early literacy preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree in education and/or TESOL/TEFL Certification preferred.
• Experience working with refugees desired.
• Ability to work with diverse client populations, community organizations, and professionals.
• Fluency in English required; proficiency in another language (e.g., Spanish, Dari, Swahili, Arabic) desirable.
• Valid Kansas or Missouri Driver’s license, dependable transportation, current vehicle insurance, and a verified safe driving record.
• Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings.
• Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
• Reliability, punctuality, professionalism, and ability to follow instructions and handle emergencies.
• Ability to work independently from general instructions.
• Passion for the mission of Catholic Charities and alignment with the agency’s values: love, patience, kindness, faithfulness, self-control, and joy.
• Understanding of Catholic Charities’ role as a representative of the Archdiocesan Church, including adherence to Catholic teachings in public speech, writing, and social media.
• Completion of VIRTUS training, background screening, drug testing, and any ongoing training as required.

Physical Requirements

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, working on a computer, standing, bending, and moving.
• Ability to lift up to 10 pounds.
• Ability to work in various environments, including client homes, extreme heat, humidity, dust, smoke, pet contamination, and exposure to cleaning supplies.
• Potential exposure to infectious diseases.
• Physical ability to effectively communicate with others and drive as required.

Schedule

Approximately 20 hours per week, primarily scheduled during evenings with potential weekend hours as needed.
