Elementary Teacher

10-month, full-time, exempt position.

About the role

Under general supervision, a teacher plans, organizes, and implements an appropriate instructional program in an elementary or secondary learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic goals by creating a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.

Responsibilities

• Plan, prepare, and deliver educational lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning.
• Demonstrate differentiated methods of instruction that effectively address individual student educational goals and needs.
• Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and other appropriate activities in furtherance of curriculum goals.
• Evaluate student progress and development to address individual needs.
• Provide supervision of students to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
• Accurately maintain student and school records as required by state or federal laws, Union County Board of Education policies, and school-based requests, adhering to confidentiality requirements.
• Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures, implementing Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies.
• Communicate regularly with students, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress and individual needs.
• Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment through relevant technology and instruction.
• Effectively communicate responsibilities to assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, and volunteers.
• Participate in school-sponsored extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs, and student organizations, as directed.
• Participate in meetings at the department, school, district, and parent/teacher conferences.
• Provide for professional growth through ongoing programs of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
• Master’s in education or a related area (desirable).
• Ability to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills.
• Specific skill-based competencies including: applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment and pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.
• Problem-solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; problem-solving with equipment is moderate.
• Ability to analyze issues and create action plans.
• Ability to compare and judge characteristics of data, people, or things against standards.
• Ability to work with diverse individuals and groups.
• Ability to interact beyond giving and receiving instructions, adaptable to stressful and emergency situations.

Physical Requirements

• Strength: Sedentary/Medium – Exert force of 10-25 lbs. frequently and up to 10 lbs. constantly; or negligible force to frequently lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
• Frequent sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching, handling, and repetitive fine motor activities.
• Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
• Vision: Frequent near acuity and occasional far acuity for reading printed materials, VDT screens, or monitoring devices.
• Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment.
• Environmental Conditions: Varies from indoors to outside weather conditions; exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to loud.
• Hazards: Uneven walking/working surfaces, communicable diseases, cleaning chemicals, lifting/carrying of materials, and power/hand-operated equipment and machinery.

Additional requirements for Physical Education Teachers:

• Lifting: 11-20 lbs. (50 lb. max).
• Push/Pull: 0-5 lbs.
• Bend/Squat/Stoop/Kneel: 15 minutes/hour minimum.
• Sitting: 90 minutes max per instance (varies by elementary, middle, and high school scheduling).
• Standing/Walking: 30-40 minutes/hour; up to 4 hours continuous max (stairs may apply based on facility layout).
• Arms above shoulders: 15 minutes/hour max.
• Hands/Wrists: Continuous use; may vary based on activity.
