Purpose Statement

The Special Education Teacher supports the instructional process by developing students' academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills. This role involves supervising students, developing and delivering lesson plans, collaborating with staff and parents, and addressing individual student needs within established curriculum guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Adapt classroom work to provide students with instructional materials aligned with individualized learning plans.
• Administer first aid and assist medically fragile children (e.g., tube feeding, toileting, diapering).
• Administer developmental testing programs and subject-specific assessments to evaluate student competency and develop learning plans.
• Advise parents/guardians on student progress, expectations, achievements, and methods for improvement.
• Assess student progress toward objectives (e.g., behavioral, motor development, communication, academic, vocational abilities) and provide feedback.
• Collaborate with staff, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes and achieve classroom objectives.
• Counsel students to improve performance, health, problem-solving, and personal issues.
• Create and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) in compliance with legal and federal requirements.
• Demonstrate methods for classroom and subject-specific assignments to provide an effective program addressing individual needs.
• Direct assistant teachers, student teachers, volunteers, and student workers to address individual student needs.
• Instruct students to improve academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills.
• Manage student behavior to maintain a safe and optimal learning environment.
• Monitor students in various environments (e.g., classroom, playground, field trips) to ensure safety.
• Participate in meetings to convey and gather information required for job functions.
• Prepare written materials (e.g., grades, attendance, IEPs, progress reports) to document student progress and meet mandated requirements.
• Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected abuse, substance abuse) to maintain student safety and adhere to school policies.
• Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Special Education.
• Wyoming PTSB Teaching Certification.
