Elementary School Teacher

This position is remote and strongly prefers candidates that reside in Virginia. May consider candidates in Washington, DC and Maryland. Must be able to attend in-person professional development, testing, and other school events.

About the Role

The Teacher is a highly qualified, state-certified educator responsible for delivering specific course content in an online environment. Teachers provide instruction, support, and guidance, manage the learning process, and focus on students’ individual needs. They monitor student progress through Stride K12’s learning management system and work closely with students and parents/learning coaches to advance each student’s learning toward established goals. While typically working from home, occasional travel is required for school functions such as state testing.

Virginia Virtual Academy (VAVA) aims to provide an exemplary individualized and engaging educational experience for students by incorporating school and family partnerships, a rigorous curriculum, and a data-driven, student-centered instructional model.

Responsibilities

• Provides rich and engaging synchronous and asynchronous learning experiences for students.
• Personalizes learning for all students and demonstrates a belief in every student’s ability to succeed.
• Differentiates instruction based on student mastery levels.
• Augments course content using appropriate asynchronous and synchronous tools under guidance from principal and coach.
• Maintains grade book, ensures academic integrity, makes student placement and promotion decisions, and alerts administrators to concerns about student performance.
• Prepares students for high-stakes standardized tests.
• Establishes and maintains positive rapport with families, communicating regularly and responding to students and learning coaches/parents in a timely manner.
• Supports learning coaches/parents with curricular, instructional, and basic troubleshooting issues in a virtual classroom.
• Travels as required (approximately once per month or 20% of the time) for professional development, student testing, and other school events.

Requirements

• Virginia Elementary Teaching Certificate (required).
• Bachelor’s degree (required).
• Active state teaching license (required).
• Ability to clear required background check (required).
• Ability to work independently, typically 40+ hours per week.
• Ability to maintain a professional home office without distraction during work hours (typically 9-5 or 8-4).

Qualifications

• Experience working with the proposed age group.
• Experience supporting adults and children in the use of technology.
• Experience teaching in an online (virtual) and/or brick-and-mortar environment.
• Experience with online learning platforms.
• Ability to work collaboratively with other teachers to interpret and produce student data representations for instructional decisions.
• Receptive to regular coaching from administrators and teacher trainers.
• Ability to embrace change and adapt to ensure excellent student outcomes.
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to rapidly learn and adapt to new technologies and teaching platforms.
• Ability to maintain teacher certification, professional development hours, and fluency in K12 systems, programs, and curriculum.

Pay

This position offers a base salary of $50,000 plus eligibility for a performance bonus.

Schedule

This is a full-time position. Work hours are typically 9-5 (or 8-4) or as defined by the school.
