Electronics Mechanic (Motor Vehicle Operator).

Responsibilities

• Performs complex Range Maintenance operations including electrical, mechanical, soldering, and equipment operations.
• Designs and fabricates unique training targets and devices.
• Works on equipment such as very high frequency transmitters and receivers, target interface units, and small arms noise-flash simulators.
• Evaluates fault reports to determine if an item should be returned to the repair section or if repair/adjustment can be made to continue testing.
• Resets all items after repairs to ensure they pass diagnostic tests without error.
• Performs common duties in maintaining electronics equipment of moderate complexity through troubleshooting, overhaul, and modifications.
• Analyzes schematic layouts of circuits, conducts visual inspections, and performs operational tests to identify malfunctioning components.
• Makes repairs by replacing damaged or faulty items such as printed circuit cards, transistors, diodes, and resistors using micro-soldering techniques.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, including a completed background investigation.
• Must possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver’s License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
• May require operation of a motor vehicle.
• Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
• Must perform shift work, rotating shifts, weekend/holiday work, and overtime as required.
• Requires completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
• Must comply with mandatory drug testing (IAW AR 600-85) and submit to recurring urinalysis.
• Frequently lifts items weighing 70 lbs. and occasionally lifts items weighing 100 lbs. or more with assistance.
• Must work in an outdoor environment with potential exposure to extreme weather.

Qualifications

Open to US Citizens. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to perform the work of an Electronics Mechanic (Motor Vehicle Operator) without more than normal supervision. Must demonstrate the ability to:

• Perform common duties in maintaining electronics equipment of moderate complexity through troubleshooting, overhaul, and modifications.
• Analyze schematic layouts of circuits, conduct visual inspections, and perform operational tests to identify malfunctioning components.
• Make repairs by replacing damaged or faulty items such as printed circuit cards, transistors, diodes, and resistors using micro-soldering techniques.

Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort & Working Conditions

Physical Effort: Frequently lifts items weighing up to 70 pounds and occasionally lifts items weighing 100 pounds or more with assistance. Requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crawling for extended periods. Must work in tiring and uncomfortable positions for long periods.

Working Conditions: Work is performed indoors and outdoors in cold, hot, and inclement weather. Exposed to potential hazards including abrasions, cuts, burns, toxic stings/bites from insects and snakes, and falls from 30-foot towers. May be exposed to electrical shock, live fire ranges, pyrotechnics, laser frequencies, explosives, and sulfuric acid when handling batteries. Safety equipment such as hearing protection, hard hats with face shields, and other devices are provided.

• Position may be filled as a Term Appointment not to exceed 2 years, with potential extensions up to 8 years with DoD approval.
• Current permanent Federal employees applying for this Term Appointment will not retain statutory return rights to a permanent position.

• Salary includes applicable locality pay or Local Market Supplement.
• Permanent Change of Station (PCS) allowances may be authorized, subject to Joint Travel Regulations and agency determination.
