Electronic Components Failure Analysis Engineer

As the operator of a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC), we deliver innovative solutions spanning satellite, launch, ground, and cyber systems for defense, civil, and commercial customers. Within the Mission Payloads Division (MPD), you’ll work in remote sensing systems, electronics, sensors, radar, artificial intelligence (AI), and advanced data networks, advancing technology from research to demonstration and integration. The Parts, Materials & Processes Department (PMPD) specializes in electrical, electronic, and electromechanical (EEE) parts procurement, qualification, application, root cause failure analysis, and materials and processes, supported by an in-house electronic component laboratory.

This position requires full-time on-site work at our El Segundo, CA facility and the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SSBI security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required.

Responsibilities

• Utilize common root cause analysis methods and equipment during hands-on failure analysis of electronic components.
• Perform independent verification and validation of contractor's methods for root cause analysis and corrective action.
• Conduct analytical studies for part reliability risk, future technology planning, and development.
• Plan and conduct work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and adaptation/modification of techniques, procedures, and criteria; devise new approaches to problems encountered.
• Engage in frequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts on matters of importance.
• Perform laboratory assignments: analytical studies, tests, development of specifications, preparation of analytical report findings, and assistance in planning and development.
• Collaborate with management, customers, contractors, and/or component supplier personnel during analysis.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in materials science, electrical engineering, physics, or another appropriate discipline.
• 5+ years of increasingly responsible and related engineering/scientific experience (8+ years for Engineering Specialist).
• Proficiency in related industry standards (e.g., MIL STD 1580).
• Excellent communication skills to concisely provide advice to customers.
• Proficiency in Microsoft 365 and collaborative applications (e.g., SharePoint, Confluence).
• Willing to travel domestically/internationally approximately 25% of the time.
• Fundamental knowledge of common failure modes of high reliability electronic parts (for Engineering Specialist).
• Experience leading, planning, and managing multifaceted failure investigations of electronic parts (for Engineering Specialist).

Qualifications

It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:

• Advanced degree from an accredited university in materials science, electrical engineering, physics, or another appropriate discipline.
• More than five years of experience in electronic component failure analysis.
• Demonstrated ability to perform construction analysis of non-MIL PRF parts and develop appropriate methods for use in space applications.
• Experience collaborating with contractors, industry working groups, and/or associations such as NASA Electronics Parts Assurance Group, Defense Logistics Agency, Joint Electron Device Engineering Council, or Automotive Electronics Council during the evaluation, selection, and adaptation of active electronic parts for space-related applications.
• Project management skills in applications such as MS Project, Jira, etc.

Pay

The grade-based pay range for this job is $110,000.00 - $193,500.00 annually. Individual salaries within that range are determined by factors including education, experience, knowledge, and skills.
