Electronic Component Engineer

This position supports the space program located in Houston, Texas (77058).

About the role

Work as a Team Lead with associated Electronics Component Engineers supporting several NASA projects and programs. Report directly to the Electronics and Electrical Section Manager as part of a group of 50 other Electronics and Electrical Engineers.

Responsibilities

• Provide Electrical, Electronic and Electromagnetic (EEE) parts support to NASA GFE Flight Projects and NASA Programs.
• Evaluate proposed EEE Parts lists with respect to the projects specific hardware criticality and environments.
• Report on the manufacturers, materials, construction, usage (environment & electrical de-rating), and overall reliability of the selected parts to the EEE parts control board (PCB).
• Recommend replacement EEE parts.
• Assist in EEE parts failure investigations.
• Review Military and industry EEE parts specifications, standards and studies for application to NASA programs.
• Assist in the development of EEE part qualification plans, project specific screening requirements, and Non-Standard Part Approval Requests (NSPAR).
• Work in a laboratory environment as required, following standard operating procedures.
• Interface with NASA customers on a regular basis and coordinate team assignments and individual tasking.
• Support design reviews and product development teams.
• Support project teams in EEE related activities including review and generation of project related documents such as procurement specifications and source control drawings (SCDs).
• Assist in preparation, analysis and distribution of NASA Advisories and Government Industry Data Exchange Program (GIDEP) Alerts.
• Assist in part selection and obsolescence review.
• Assist in electrical part failure investigation.
• Assist design program in writing the NSPAR (Non-Standard Parts Approval Request) with the PCB info.
• Assist RITF or other groups with DPA (Destructive Physical Analysis) for any PCB as a condition for part approval.
• Support project in finding Passive and Active components (e.g., Resistors, capacitors, transformers, ICs, transistors, diodes).
• Develop part specifications and test procedures for space level parts.
• Provide technical assistance to contracted test labs and part manufacturers.
• Provide customer/project team applications assistance.
• Review electrical test data to verify part/lot acceptability.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident status due to the sensitivity of customer-related information.
• Experience in the space industry or Department of Defense/Department of War.
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
• Minimum of 10+ years of recent and related work experience.
• Prior experience leading a technical team.
• Understanding of component selection, screening, qualification, and derating for use in space flight applications.
• Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, TEAMS).
• Strong team player with a strong work ethic and cultural alignment.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills with internal and external customers.
• Ability to follow company programs, processes, procedures, and requirements.
• Organizational and time management skills, with the ability to work outside normal schedules and adjust to peak periods.
• Generally, an office environment, but may involve inside or outside work depending on the task. Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of the time) and may require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of the time).

Qualifications (Desired)

• Knowledge of component failure modes, component reliability, and NASA component specifications and standards.
• Knowledge of NASA space flight hardware processes.
• Understanding of passive components, microcircuit, hybrid, semiconductor, and discrete device fabrication.
• Prior experience with accelerated reliability testing, reliability theory, and component failure analysis.
• Knowledge of the EEE parts used in high reliability military/DoD or space hardware and the associated US military test specifications and standards.
• Experience with the development of EEE parts management plans, destructive physical analysis (DPA), and parts failure analysis.
• Strong background in Electronic Engineering including knowledge of EEE parts, technologies, and manufacturing processes.
• Experience with product development, pre-production activity, and product life cycle.
• Sourcing background in electronics industry and supply chain experience with electrical technologies and part manufacturers.

Schedule

This position is located onsite and offers a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off. Some travel may be required. Schedules are subject to change based on the requirements of the position and/or customer needs.
