About the role
The Department of Facilities and Administrative Services provides a broad array of services to the campus community, including Access Control Services, Automotive Services, Building Services, Energy and Central Utilities, Facilities Operations, Grounds and Landscape Maintenance Services, Mailing and Receiving Services, Occupational Safety and Environmental Services, and Risk Management Services. This position resides within the Electric Shop of the Office of Facilities Operations.
Works from electrical sketches, schematics, plans, and specifications in accordance with the electrical code or approved trade practices and established procedures.
Responsibilities
- Perform skilled electrical work in the installation, repair, adjustment, and maintenance of campus electrical systems and equipment.
- Ensure electrical systems are safe, reliable, and compliant with applicable codes and standards.
- Respond to calls for emergency assistance and overtime, both emergency and scheduled, pursuant to departmental protocol.
- Install, repair, and maintain all types of electrical circuits, systems, and equipment, including 480 volts and lower voltages.
- Carry a departmental radio at all times to receive calls for services and to request assistance.
- Ensure all work areas and shop areas are clean and clear of debris; complete cleanup prior to the end of the workday or job assignment.
- Comply with all college occupational health, safety, security, and environmental regulations and procedures.
- Perform preventive maintenance on all types of electrical circuits, systems, and equipment.
- Work in buildings without elevators, relying on stairs to move materials and navigate facilities.
Requirements
- Three (3) years of experience in the installation, inspection, repair, servicing, and maintenance of electrical equipment, appliances, machinery, and circuits.
- Ability to analyze problems in the maintenance and repair of electrical circuits, systems, and equipment, including 480 volts and lower voltages.
- Demonstrated broad experience in a commercial/industrial environment as an electrician.
- Capability to walk distances in all weather conditions, navigate stairs, climb ladders, utilize scaffolding or powered lifts, kneel, negotiate tight spaces, and work in high spaces.
- Ability to lift tools, materials, and equipment up to 70 pounds.
- Ability to work in all kinds of weather conditions year-round.
- Ability to work in limited lighting and extreme temperatures (e.g., non-air-conditioned spaces, attics, and roof access locations).
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a busy, fast-paced environment.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license in good standing issued by state of residence is required.
Applicants who do not possess the required experience may substitute a current Electrical Contractor license issued by the New Jersey Department of Consumer Affairs for three (3) years of experience. Appointees may be required to pass a colorblindness test.
Qualifications

- High School Diploma.
- Knowledgeable in preventive maintenance of electrical circuits, systems, and equipment.

Pay
Internal salary (for current NJ state employees with underlying classified status): Range 16, Steps 1-11 – $52,308.32 - $75,945.22.
External salary: Range 16, Steps 1-4 – $52,308.32 - $59,402.09.

40 hours per week (Full-time).
