About the role

The position of Electrician I/II is responsible for performing both rough and finished electrical work for Macon-Bibb County. Essential duties include installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical service and equipment for county facilities and properties, as well as street, interstate, and park lighting.

Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, and maintain electrical service and equipment for Macon-Bibb County facilities and properties.
  • Install, repair, and maintain street lighting, interstate lighting, and park lighting owned by Macon-Bibb County.
  • Install, repair, and maintain electrical and electronic control systems for Macon-Bibb County facilities and properties.
  • Determine proper types of wiring to be used; measure, cut, and terminate wires.
  • Respond to accident scenes involving Macon-Bibb County owned street and interstate lighting to de-energize any live conductors and clean up lighting debris.
  • Ensure the proper operation and use of vehicles, equipment, and tools available to the Facilities Management Department.
  • Participate in the on-call duty rotation.
  • Perform and assist with other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school degree or GED, supplemented by a standard electrical training course.
  • Two (2) to three (3) years of experience in the electrical field for an Electrician I, or three (3) to five (5) years for an Electrician II.
  • Low voltage wiring and fire alarm systems experience is a plus.
  • A Commercial Driver’s License, Class B with no air brake restrictions, or the ability to obtain this license within six (6) months.
  • Available for 24-hour emergency call response as needed.
  • Comfortable and able to work at heights, ladders, lift equipment, and bucket trucks.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of basic electrical, electronic, and mechanical principles as applied to electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools, equipment, and practices in the electrical trade.
  • Basic working knowledge of personal computers.
  • Ability to read and understand wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to apply training and prior experience to electrical systems maintenance.
  • Ability to analyze, isolate, and correct problems in electrical systems.
  • Ability to care for and use vehicles, tools, and equipment of the electrical trade.
  • Effective working relationships with fellow employees and members of the general public.

Skills

  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the electrical trade.
  • Ability to apply training and prior experience to electrical systems maintenance.
  • Ability to analyze, isolate, and correct problems in electrical systems.
  • Ability to care for and use vehicles, tools, and equipment of the electrical trade.
