Electrician

About the role

This is skilled electrical work at the journeyman level. A position in this class troubleshoots electrical malfunctions, repairs, replaces, or installs power and wiring equipment and systems for County facilities and buildings. Work also includes the incidental performance of work in related trades.

Responsibilities

• Receives job orders or notices of malfunction; inspects and tests item, wiring circuits, switch gear and other components to determine source of problem;
• Servicess, removes, repairs, replaces, tests and operates high and low voltage motor controls and power equipment, transformers, annunciators, generators, refrigeration, air conditioning and heating systems, and specialized equipment;
• Inspects and studies building plans and drawings for installation work requirements;
• Prepares area for work, including opening partitions as necessary for access to affected area or fixture, running underground and/or overhead cables and wires, and splicing wires and cables;
• Bends and joins pipes and conduits;
• Makes repair or alteration, installing fixtures, switches, wiring, controls, transformers, circuit breakers, etc.;
• Insures effective hook-up of all components;
• Inspects finished job for conformance to requirements;
• Codes and accepted trade standards.

Requirements

• Determines materials needed for jobs, checking against supplies;
• Orders and receives supplies and equipment for each job;
• Coincides schedule for job performance, including the shutoff of power, with other building personnel and those in affected area;
• Keeps records of jobs performed, materials used and related information;
• Works with contractors, inspectors and vendors to plan for and coordinate efforts in larger alteration or repair jobs;
• May instruct and oversee the work of other personnel providing assistance with jobs;
• Assists other trades personnel and/or performs such maintenance work.

Qualifications

• Thorough knowledge of electrical principles, practices, methods and techniques commonly employed in the repair, alteration and installation of electrical fixtures and systems;
• Thorough knowledge of the tools, substances, and safety precautions of the electrical trade;
• Knowledge of principles and practices addressed by, and general provisions of, electrical, environmental, safety and other code requirements;
• Ability to learn the specific codes and regulatory provisions governing electrical work in the County;
• Ability to read and interpret building plans and sketches;
• Ability to determine time, materials and equipment required to complete assigned jobs;
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;
• Ability to keep records of activities;
• Ability to lift, carry and maneuver into position motors, blowers, cables and other such heavy and/or unwieldy fixtures.
