About the role

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS’ expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions supports critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.

This position will interact with technical staff and report to test and department managers. The tests supported range from production and factory acceptance tests to system and component-level requirements verification, operational tests, lifecycle tests, environmental tests, and electromagnetic interference/compatibility tests.

Responsibilities

  • Applies technical knowledge to develop concepts and plans for test systems and programs
  • Analyzes, investigates, and resolves Test engineering problems across pulse power, DC motors and motor drives, Data Acquisition and Test Instrumentation, and PCBA/modules aboard small satellites
  • Translates system or product requirements into verification tests and instructions
  • Participates in establishing design concepts, criteria, and engineering efforts for testing
  • Creates and updates Test procedures and assists sub-contractors in design and execution of electronics tests
  • Leads efforts to install and set-up instrumentation in San Diego and at remote sites
  • Conducts testing and verification as directed by the Test Lead
  • Independently executes and directs system and subsystem test operations
  • Assists with technical direction to staff engineers, technicians, and subcontractors
  • Troubleshoots test systems, equipment, and test procedures as needed
  • Analyzes test data and prepares collected data for creation of test reports
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Adheres to all laws, regulations, and applicable obligations wherever business is conducted
  • Ensures work is accomplished safely in accordance with established operating procedures and practices
  • Travels up to 25% to test sites in Colorado, Southern California, Alabama, and Mississippi
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Typically requires a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution, with progressive engineering experience:
    • Four or more years with a bachelor’s degree
    • Two or more years with a master’s degree
    May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; broad application of those concepts; and expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties
  • Ability to develop and communicate new concepts; apply them accurately in an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and determine appropriate approaches to provide solutions to complex problems
  • Strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; perform complex tasks in one or more engineering areas; represent the organization as a prime technical contact; and lead a team of moderately experienced professionals on single-component projects
  • Ability to work extended hours and travel as needed
  • Customer-focused with the ability to work on a self-initiated basis or in a team environment
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance may be required

Desirable Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of space or missile systems with experience conducting environmental tests
  • Hands-on experience testing power electronic equipment
  • Experience writing technical documents such as test procedures and test reports
  • Experience communicating technical information to peers and customers
  • Demonstrated expertise in leading or guiding a team independently
  • Working knowledge of Power Electronics in power conditioning and storage, with experience conducting tests in development and production environments
  • Experience in MIL-STD 461 testing
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced testing environment

Pay

Salary range: $81,080 – $141,650
