Electrical Technician (Test & Trials)

General Dynamics NASSCO is one of three shipyards in the Marine Systems group of General Dynamics Corporation, located along the working waterfront of San Diego Bay. The company has been designing and building ships in San Diego since 1960 and is the largest full-service shipyard on the West Coast of the United States.

About the role

Installs electrical equipment in accordance with applicable standards. Mounts equipment on foundations, cabinets, routes/runs cables, and completes all electrical connections to equipment. Performs commissioning and testing functions for electrical equipment, including cold insulation checks, megger checks, physical inspection, initial light off and testing, and final operational testing.

Typical equipment tested includes motors and controllers, generators, switchboards, power panels and load centers, machinery centralized control systems (MCCS), PLCs, tank level indicators, motor-operated valves, public address systems, fire detection systems, sound-powered and dial telephone systems, galley equipment, HVAC controls, and machinery controllers.

Responsibilities

• Install, inspect, test, and repair electrical equipment.
• Perform layout and electrical equipment installations.
• Troubleshoot and repair electrical equipment.
• Read blueprints, schematic diagrams, and use electrical test equipment and hand/power tools.
• Perform cold insulation checks, megger checks, physical inspections, initial light off, and final operational testing.
• Work at heights, in confined spaces, and be available to work any shift.
• Housekeeping in all work areas, including sweeping.
• Attend safety, quality, and/or process improvement meetings as required.

Requirements

• Experience in troubleshooting and repairing electrical equipment.
• Knowledge of electrical theory, marine wiring practices, and ability to read cable and wire color codes.
• Ability to read blueprints and schematic diagrams.
• Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and on any shift.
• Good eye/hand/foot coordination and color vision.
• Ability to comprehend written and verbal instructions, hear warning signals, and read safety instructions.
• Frequent lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs, pulling, standing, balancing, walking, climbing ladders, reaching, pushing, kneeling, bending, stooping, handling, and fingering.

Work Environment

• Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, various climates, and low ventilation conditions.
• Exposure to constantly moving machines, mechanical parts, and high noise levels.
• Works in all areas of the shipyard and onboard ships.

Tools & Equipment

• Hand tools, power tools, and electrical test equipment.
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) required.

Pay

Hourly pay range: $36.90 - $40.25.
