Electrical System Development Engineer, One MHS
About the role
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Electrical System Development Engineer to help develop the next generation of robotics, automation, and material handling systems for Amazon's operations. Our team owns end-to-end electrical system design and implementation for an emerging technology, integrating power distribution, controls, industrial networks, functional safety, and field devices.
Responsibilities
- Define system requirements, interfaces, and acceptance criteria, working backwards from customer and field needs
- Design electrical system architectures that integrate power distribution, controls, industrial networks, and functional safety
- Translate architectures into modular, connectorized designs that simplify deployment and maintenance
- Develop and maintain system schematics in EPLAN, and manage bills of material and engineering changes through PLM
- Perform power-system analysis and sizing, including load calculations, fault current, protective-device coordination, and SCCR
- Develop electrical system models and integrate them with system-level simulations to size and optimize future sites
- Define system performance and reliability metrics, and analyze simulation, test, and operational data using tools such as Python and SQL to validate designs and guide improvements
- Automate electrical system design, including device placement, cable routing, schematic generation, and documentation
- Develop tested, maintainable engineering tools and automation, using AI-assisted development where it improves design quality and speed
- Make and communicate data-driven tradeoffs among safety, performance, reliability, cost, and deployment speed
- Plan and execute verification and integration testing, drive difficult electrical and controls issues to root cause, and apply standards including the NEC, NFPA 79, and UL 508A for compliance and certification
- Support builds, commissioning, and field troubleshooting, and lead design reviews across engineering and operations teams
- Provide technical guidance to other engineers and contribute to team-wide design and automation standards
Qualifications
The ideal candidate is a curious, detail-oriented builder who moves comfortably between system architecture, detailed electrical design, modeling, and hands-on troubleshooting.
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent
- Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Python, Ruby, Golang, Java, C++, C#, Rust
- 3+ years of experience designing and developing complex systems for automation, robotics, material handling, or similarly complex applications
- Experience developing electrical schematics or system architecture diagrams
- Ability to travel up to 25% domestically and internationally
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience automating electrical design, including ECAD scripting or APIs, rules-based configuration, and automated placement and routing
- Experience developing models and simulations of electrical or electromechanical systems
- Experience with power-system analysis, including load calculations, fault-current analysis, protective-device coordination, and SCCR
- Experience with industrial network architectures and protocols such as EtherCAT, PROFINET, or EtherNet/IP
- Hands-on experience building, commissioning, and troubleshooting industrial electrical systems
- Experience developing engineering tools and automation using SQL, Python, or AI-assisted development
Pay
The base salary range for this position is $129,200.00 - $174,800.00 USD annually, with additional compensation including sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs).
