The Electrical Instrumentation Designer performs advanced computer-aided drafting (CAD) and design, applying established and emerging drafting methods, techniques, and procedures. This role routinely works independently and provides technical leadership to other technicians, including planning, organizing, and prioritizing work to meet project objectives. The position serves as a subject-matter resource and may specialize in one or more areas of Electrical and Instrumentation (E&I) design.
Key Responsibilities
- Uses AutoCAD software and advanced features such as AutoCAD Electrical to perform complex design work; demonstrates a strong understanding of job management, schedules, and deliverables.
- Leads and coordinates design activities for assigned projects, including task planning, workload distribution, and technical guidance to other designers.
- Develops, reviews, and approves drawing packages, ensuring compliance with project requirements, client standards, and applicable codes.
- Plans, manages, and executes drawing issues and transmittals to align with project milestones and schedules.
- Supports estimating and proposal development by providing design input, man hour estimates, and technical clarifications.
- Leads and documents fact-finding field trips; translates field conditions into accurate and constructible design documents.
- Performs quality control reviews of design work prepared by others to ensure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to standards.
- Collaborates with engineers, project managers, and other disciplines to resolve design issues and support integrated project execution.
- Mentors and trains technicians, contributing to skill development, knowledge transfer, and continuous improvement.
- Leverages software tools to efficiently create, modify, and enhance timesheets, expense reports, project document control, and drawing management systems.
- Participates in ongoing training to maintain technical proficiency and stay current with industry standards, software, and best practices.
- Performs additional duties as assigned in support of project and departmental objectives.
- Applies detailed knowledge of electrical plans (A/G and U/G), conduit details, wiring schematics, one-lines, loop drawings, panel design, and instrument installation details.
- Demonstrates familiarity with applicable electrical codes and standards, including NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code).
Education and Experience
- Education: Associates or Bachelor’s degree in a Technical discipline preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of eight (8) years’ job-related experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrates a strong desire to expand knowledge and take on new responsibilities within the field.
- Proficient in Revit, AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, and/or other discipline-specific programs preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook).
- Excellent organizational and time management skills to handle multiple tasks and meet project deadlines effectively.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a project team.
