Job Summary
The Fire Alarm & Low Voltage Installation Apprentice will assist the Lead Technician in a wide range of tasks related to the installation, servicing, testing, and inspection of electrical systems and life safety devices. This entry-level role provides hands-on experience and training across multiple disciplines in the low voltage and fire protection fields.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Bend, cut, and install conduit in accordance with NEC (National Electrical Code) standards.
- Pull wire through a variety of environments including above drop ceilings, inside walls, through conduit, and across exposed joists or ceilings.
- Terminate wires at appropriate terminals and create wire nut connections safely and accurately.
- Operate a range of power tools including, but not limited to, drills, rotary hammers, and bandsaws.
- Read and use a tape measure accurately; perform basic construction math as needed.
- Ensure all installations comply with NEC and NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code) requirements.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment throughout all phases of the project.
- Review project scope, drawings, and tasks with the lead technician prior to starting work.
Qualifications
- Experience with fire alarm system installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, or inspection.
- Familiarity with low-voltage (12V-70V DC) and line-voltage (120V AC) systems.
- Knowledge of CCTV, structured cabling/data systems, and access control technologies.
- Ability to safely operate scissor lifts and aerial lifts.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and overtime, as needed.
- Certifications considered a plus: BICSI Certification, City of Pittsburgh Electrician License, NICET Fire Alarm Certifications, West Virginia Low Voltage License, Ohio Fire Certification, OSHA Certifications, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with H Endorsement.
Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required; trade school degree is a plus.
- Basic knowledge of wiring and/or electrical construction.
- Experience using electronic test equipment and troubleshooting tools.
- Basic understanding of blueprints and wiring schematics.
- Proficient with hand and power tools commonly used in electrical and low voltage work.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple tasks.
- Demonstrates strong teamwork and a collaborative mindset.
- Prior customer service experience is a plus.
- Ability to work overtime and adjust to varying schedules as required.
- Comfortable adapting to change with little advance notice.
- Must have a clean driving record and reliable transportation.
