Electrical Inspector

About the role

The Inspection Department provides professional quality assurance and regulatory support for the Facilities Services Division’s school construction projects. This role involves inspecting electrical installations on new construction, alterations, and improvement projects to ensure compliance with contract documents, plans, specifications, and State and local codes.

Responsibilities

• Inspect electrical installations to ensure materials and workmanship comply with plans, specifications, contracts, and applicable codes.
• Inspect light, power, bell, fire alarm, clock, and energy conservation installations.
• Examine outlet boxes, conduits, wires, switchboards, transformers, and cabinets for compliance with specifications and approved material lists.
• Advise Construction Inspectors of discrepancies between architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical plans.
• Review plans and specifications of electrical systems and recommend improvements to architects and engineers.
• Observe the pulling of major electrical feeder cables.
• Maintain a daily log of inspections and corrections needed, and prepare reports as required.
• Coordinate the work of other specialty inspectors on electrical contracts.

Requirements

• Graduation from high school or equivalent educational proficiency, preferably supplemented with college-level courses in electrical construction or engineering.
• Completion of a recognized electrical apprenticeship or trade school program in electrical construction is desirable.
• Four years of experience as a journey-level electrician, including three years in the installation or repair of institutional, commercial, or industrial electrical systems.
• A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California.
• Certification by International Code Council as a California Commercial Electrical Inspector is preferable.

Desirable Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess considerable knowledge of:

• The principles and standard practices of civil engineering.
• State and local codes pertaining to civil engineering features of building construction.
• The relationship of civil engineering to other engineering and architectural features of buildings, including cost and operation comparisons.
• AutoCAD or other recognized major computer-aided design software systems.
• Principles of supervision.

The ideal candidate will also have the ability to:

• Provide technical review and advice tactfully and effectively.
• Effectively utilize AutoCAD software to create and update civil engineering plans and designs.
• Comprehend complex plans and specifications and edit the work of others.
• Write clear, concise reports and technical descriptions.
• Work effectively with architects, engineers, District personnel, and representatives of public agencies and utility companies.
• Supervise effectively.
