About the Role

The Estimator II is a mid-level professional responsible for preparing and completing bid documents and cost estimates for electrical construction projects. This role solves a range of straightforward problems and assembles construction costs by collecting and studying information, evaluating bid specifications and drawings. With moderate guidance, the Estimator II supports small- to medium-sized projects, assisted by a senior-level estimator.

Responsibilities

  • Review proposal specifications and drawings to determine the scope of work and requirements.
  • Prepare estimates by calculating the complete takeoff of the scope of work and entering them into the computer estimating system; review the estimate printout for accuracy and completeness.
  • Identify qualified suppliers/subcontractors and solicit quotes. Review quotes for completeness according to plans and specifications.
  • Itemize and quantify all incidentals necessary in preparing the bid packages, including sub-contract work, equipment rental, tools, and supplies.
  • Provide guidance to personnel preparing the completion matrix discipline for assigned bids.
  • In conjunction with Senior Estimators, develop labor productivity and installation unit costs based on projected site conditions and historical data.
  • Compile and execute the scope of work, address technical requirements and pricing, then present them to the Lead Estimator, Estimating Manager, and/or Chief Estimator for the estimated bid package.
  • After a successful bid, meet with the project management team and senior-level estimator to fully explain the estimate, scope of work, quotes, and offer aspects for the successful transition of the project.
  • Ensure the timely completion of all client-required documents.
  • Prepare scope letter inclusions, exclusions, and clarifications for estimates.
  • Maintain files of working documents for backup to estimating assumptions and methodologies.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of the assigned discipline, construction technology, estimating techniques, and cost control.
  • Ability to interpret computerized cost data and electrical systems.
  • Perform arithmetic calculations required for estimating.
  • Read and interpret engineering design drawings, specifications, and front-end documents.
  • Identify and meet customers’ needs, expectations, and requirements.
  • Solve practical problems and deal with variables in situations with limited standardization.
  • Proficient in using a computer and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Prioritize and manage multiple tasks, adapting to changing priorities as necessary.
  • Work under time pressure with a positive attitude.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Interact effectively and professionally with all levels of employees, vendors, clients, and others.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience estimating commercial construction projects, preferably in electrical construction.
  • Proficient in Accubid estimating software.
  • Proficient in CAD or 3D software (preferred).
  • Qualifications can be a combination of education, training, and relevant experience.

Working Conditions

  • General work environment: sitting for long periods, standing, walking, typing, carrying, pushing, bending. Work is primarily indoors with varying environmental conditions such as fluorescent lighting and air conditioning.
  • Exposure to outside weather conditions while on the jobsite.
  • Noise level is usually low to medium; can be loud on the jobsite.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs.
  • Travel up to 10%.
