About the role
CenterPoint Energy is seeking a Substation Engineer to join the Substation Resilience Engineering Design Team in Houston, Texas. This position focuses on the Electrical and Structural design of substations.
Responsibilities
- Engineer and review physical design electrical drawings, plan and profile drawings, grounding, conduit, foundation, and vendor drawings as necessary to facilitate the design and construction of substation facilities.
- Develop, review, and analyze basic one lines, relay and metering one lines, AC / DC schematics, SCADA diagrams, interconnection diagrams, and schematics as necessary to facilitate the design and construction of substation facilities.
- Manage basic, standard, or complex engineering projects and studies, ensuring completion by established timeline and at a reasonable cost.
- Prepare engineering and construction packages, including maps, material bills, drawings and work orders.
- Interface with inspectors, engineers, construction personnel, warehousing personnel, purchasing agents, vendors and management regarding materials and standards development, procurement, and packaging issues.
- Support the construction, operation, and maintenance of CNP substation infrastructure through effective communication with field personnel and contractors.
- Prepare and coordinate the ordering and fabrication of standard and non-standard project material.
- Prepare and review work orders and project bill of material documentation to ensure proper material is ordered in a timely manner.
- Resolve problems during engineering or construction projects to develop sound solutions based on engineering best practices.
- Perform accurate engineering design calculations and analysis with minimal supervision.
- Develop design options or recommendations for structures, systems and components.
- Review and evaluate existing and new technology, engineering methods and operating philosophies for potential system improvement.
Qualifications
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum of two years of electric utility or power engineering experience that includes performing engineering calculations and design.
- Able to perform inspections of work sites, coordinate and exchange ideas with field personnel, vendors and fabricators, and follow up with inspections.
Skills
- Proficiency in using CAD equipment and software programs for project documentation.
- Experience with SAP, GIS, and Microstation for technical engineering applications.
- Ability to interpret and apply applicable codes and standards (i.e. National Electric Safety Code, National Electric Code, etc.).
- Ability to communicate effectively, in oral and written form, with co-workers, customers, vendors and the community.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle and drive a motor vehicle daily or for extended time periods, in a safe manner, and enter/exit vehicle unassisted.
