About the role

This posting seeks to fill a management-level vacancy in the H TX TRANSMISSION & DISTRIBUTION ENGINEERING Department of the H ENGINEERING Division at Hawaiian Electric Company. The position may be filled at either the Engineer I or Engineer II (T&D) level, depending on the qualifications of the candidate.

Responsibilities

  • Performs design, project engineering, project management, and general engineering duties in support of the capital construction programs of Hawaiian Electric.
  • Prepares plans, layouts, design calculations, and related engineering design in accordance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Conducts project design and cost alternative studies, field inspections, and prepares associated reports.
  • Prepares and manages cost estimates, budgets, schedules, material and construction specifications, and construction contracts for assigned projects.
  • Performs project engineering and project management functions for assigned projects.
  • Coordinates work by consulting engineers, evaluates proposals and bids for engineering services and equipment, and makes recommendations.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned.
  • For Engineer II: Develops new or improved techniques and procedures for equipment, material, products, or methods.
  • For Engineer II: Works with City/County, State, and Federal government agencies on rules, regulations, and permits regarding projects.
  • For Engineer II: Conducts engineering studies, prepares reports, and reviews/comments on technical reports and studies prepared by others.
  • For Engineer II: Directs design efforts by consultants and checks designs prepared by consultants.
  • For Engineer II: Develops project schedules and project cost estimates for inclusion in the capital budget.
  • Conducts field inspections to verify field conditions and check compliance with specifications, then prepares reports of findings.

Requirements

  • A BS degree in engineering in a discipline relevant to the Department from an accredited engineering school.
  • Thorough knowledge of the theories and principles of engineering acquired through advanced college-level courses or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering design, project engineering, project management, and construction methods associated with electric utility facilities.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications such as spreadsheets and word processing.
  • Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices.
  • Working knowledge of SafeStart principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.
  • Good leadership skills, including effective written, oral, and listening communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle confrontational, difficult, and/or sensitive issues with professionalism, tact, courtesy, and discretion.
  • Ability to perform in-depth analytical and administrative tasks, such as preparing and monitoring project requirements and resolving cost and time constraints or conflicting priorities.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license and meet the standards for driving positions.
  • For Engineer I: Minimum of 3 years’ relevant engineering experience.
  • For Engineer II: Minimum of 5 years’ relevant engineering experience in the design of additions, modifications, extensions, upgrades, and arrangements of company generation, transmission, substation, and communication and control systems and facilities.
  • For Engineer II: State of Hawaii Professional Engineer License in a relevant discipline is required to stamp drawings and designs for construction and building permits.

Pay

  • Engineer I (T&D): $80,000.00 to $101,600.00
  • Engineer II (T&D): $99,900.00 to $127,500.00
