Electrical Engineer - Data Centers
About the role
IES is seeking a licensed Electrical Engineer to support the design, engineering, and field execution of modular data center projects. This role combines office-based electrical engineering with active project site and fabrication facility involvement, requiring deep expertise in mission-critical power systems, electrical distribution, and low-voltage infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Design and engineer electrical systems for modular data center facilities, including power distribution, UPS systems, backup generation, automatic transfer switches, and grounding and bonding.
Develop and review electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, specifications, and load calculations for modular units and site infrastructure.
Prepare and stamp engineering documents as required by project specifications, permitting authorities, or clients.
Coverge electrical design with structural, mechanical, and low-voltage teams to ensure integrated and constructable modular solutions.
Ensure all designs comply with applicable codes and standards, including NEC, NFPA 70, NFPA 75, NFPA 76, TIA-942, and local jurisdictional requirements.
Support value engineering efforts to optimize electrical systems for reliability, efficiency, and cost.
Participate in pre-construction activities including design-build scopes, RFI responses, and submittal review.
Conduct site and fabrication facility visits to verify installation compliance, assess conditions, and support field teams.
Provide technical guidance to field crews on electrical system requirements and installation methods during construction and module assembly.
Review and interpret field conditions and recommend design modifications as needed.
Support electrical commissioning, systems testing, and project closeout activities.
Required Specific Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
Active Professional Engineer (PE) license, required.
Minimum 10 years of electrical engineering experience, with preference for data center, mission-critical, or modular construction environments.
Proficiency in electrical design software (AutoCAD, Revit MEP, or similar).
Strong working knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70, NFPA 75, NFPA 76, TIA-942, and related codes and standards.
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites and fabrication facilities as required.
Preferred Experience
Designing electrical systems for modular or prefabricated data center facilities.
Familiarity with Uptime Institute Tier standards and data center reliability requirements.
Experience with low-voltage systems including structured cabling, security, and building management systems in data center environments.
Familiarity with design-build project delivery in a contractor environment.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and project management tools.
