Power System Protection Engineer Location: Onsite (5 days/week) at one of the following offices: Overland Park, KS; Ann Arbor, MI; Bloomington, MN; Dallas, TX; Denver, CO; Houston, TX; Orlando, FL; Phoenix, AZ; Cary, NC; or Tualatin, OR and more. About the Role We are seeking a highly motivated Power System Protection Engineer with 5-10 years of experience to join a growing Protective Relay Settings Team. This role will support a variety of utility, transmission, distribution, substation, and renewable energy projects by developing relay protection settings, performing power system studies, and ensuring reliable operation of critical electrical infrastructure.The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Protection & Control (P&C) engineering, protective relay applications, power system analysis, and relay setting development. Key Responsibilities Develop, review, and validate protective relay settings for transmission, distribution, generation, and substation projects.Perform short-circuit, coordination, arc flash, and protection studies using industry-standard software.Create and maintain relay setting files, settings calculations, and technical documentation.Apply protection schemes for transmission lines, transformers, buses, generators, reactors, capacitors, and distribution feeders.Utilize software platforms such as ASPEN OneLiner, CAPE, ETAP, SKM, PSLF, PSS®E, and relay manufacturer tools.Review one-line diagrams, protection philosophies, and engineering design packages.Analyze relay event reports, oscillography data, and disturbance records to support troubleshooting and system performance evaluations.Support commissioning activities, testing reviews, and protection system upgrades.Collaborate with engineering teams, project managers, and clients to deliver high-quality technical solutions.Ensure designs and settings comply with applicable utility standards, NERC requirements, and industry best practices. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.5-10 years of experience in Protective Relaying, Protection & Control Engineering, or Power Systems Engineering.Strong understanding of electrical power systems and protection principles.Experience performing relay setting calculations and developing protection settings packages.Proficiency with relay manufacturer software, including SEL, GE, ABB/Hitachi Energy, Siemens, or similar platforms.Experience using power system analysis and modeling software.Knowledge of transmission, distribution, and substation protection schemes.Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills.Ability to work onsite five days per week. Preferred Qualifications Professional Engineer (PE) license.Utility, consulting engineering, EPC, or renewable energy project experience.Familiarity with NERC, IEEE, and utility protection standards.Experience supporting commissioning, testing, and field implementation activities. Proven experience performing protective relay setting calculations and developing relay setting files. Hands-on experience with relay manufacturer software platforms such as SEL, GE, Siemens, ABB/Hitachi, or equivalent. Proficiency with power system analysis and modeling software including ASPEN OneLiner, CAPE, ETAP, SKM, PSLF, PSS®E, or similar tools. Experience conducting short-circuit, coordination, fault, and protection studies. Knowledge of transmission line, transformer, bus, generator, and feeder protection schemes. Ability to analyze relay event reports, troubleshoot protection system issues, and recommend corrective actions. Familiarity with utility standards, NERC/FERC requirements, and industry best practices. Strong technical writing, documentation, and communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary engineering teams and support multiple projects simultaneously. Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution required.
