About the role

This role focuses on designing, developing, and integrating electrical systems for autonomous marine platforms. You will own subsystem electrical architectures, create robust assemblies for challenging marine environments, and collaborate closely with mechanical and software teams to deliver reliable, field-ready solutions. The position combines hands-on prototype work, lab testing, and participation in field deployments and sea trials.

Responsibilities

  • Review, analyze, and interpret circuit diagrams, schematics, and electrical layouts to ensure accurate and reliable designs.
  • Plan, develop, and refine electrical systems for autonomous marine platforms, including power distribution, control systems, and signal integrity.
  • Own the electrical architecture for subsystems across WAM-V® and PowerBuoy® platforms and ensure consistency and scalability.
  • Design, develop, and prototype electrical assemblies, including wiring harnesses, connectors, enclosures, and PCB-based systems suitable for marine environments.
  • Integrate electrical systems with mechanical and software components by working closely with cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Perform diagnostics, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis on electrical systems in both laboratory and field environments.
  • Support system bring-up, validation, and testing, including active participation in field deployments and sea trials.
  • Gather and internalize feedback from team members, manufacturing, and customers, and refine designs to address performance, usability, and manufacturability needs.
  • Ensure that all electrical designs meet reliability, safety, and environmental requirements for marine operation, including corrosion resistance, sealing, vibration tolerance, and thermal performance.
  • Create and maintain clear electrical documentation, such as wiring diagrams, bills of materials, and test procedures, and simplify these materials to be usable by operators of all skill levels.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in an electrical engineering role.
  • Strong proficiency in electrical circuit design, analysis, and system integration.
  • Experience using PCB design tools, with Altium Designer preferred.
  • Familiarity with circuit simulation tools such as Cadence or equivalent platforms.
  • Experience working with embedded systems and basic programming skills in languages such as C++ or Python.
  • Strong understanding of electrical components, wiring practices, and electrical safety considerations.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve electrical issues in complex systems.
  • Experience with power systems, battery integration, and energy management.
  • Willingness to participate in field deployments and sea trials as part of system validation.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with marine, outdoor, or other ruggedized electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with environmental sealing, corrosion mitigation, and ruggedization techniques for harsh environments.
  • Hands-on experience with prototype builds, hardware integration, and field testing.
  • Experience working with autonomous systems, robotics, or unmanned vehicles.
  • Eligibility for U.S. government security clearance, if required for specific projects.

Work Environment

This is an onsite role based in Richmond, working primarily in an engineering and lab environment with access to test equipment, prototype hardware, and marine platforms. The position involves close collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams and regular interaction with mechanical and software systems. You will support system bring-up, validation, and testing in both lab and field settings, including participation in sea trials and other on-water deployments. The work includes hands-on activities with electrical assemblies and ruggedized marine equipment in an environment focused on innovation, reliability, and real-world performance.
