About the role
As an Electrical Engineer 4, you will design electrical systems that support critical infrastructure and make a meaningful impact on communities. You’ll contribute to challenging design and construction projects across electrical engineering disciplines, including complex power system design and analysis, field investigations, and construction-phase services. Responsibilities
- Under limited supervision, develop basic to highly complex designs for electrical master plans, power systems, protection and generation models, facility power systems, sustainability and renewable energy systems, and similar electrical systems.
- Perform power system studies and electrical calculations, including lighting simulations and layouts, communications, fire alarm, security, and related facility system analyses.
- Conduct site reviews and technical studies to confirm existing conditions and ensure designs align with site-specific requirements. Revise design criteria and requirements based on findings.
- Contribute to the firm’s Technical Knowledge Management (TKM) program by developing white papers, technical design documentation, and case studies related to new, specialized, or complex designs and studies.
- Prepare and submit technical papers and designs for publication in industry journals.
- Collaborate with sales staff to develop proposals in response to current and prospective client requests for proposals. Review draft proposals for alignment with firm standards, industry best practices, and applicable federal, state, and local requirements.
- Meet with current and prospective clients to understand their present and future design needs and support the development of appropriate technical solutions.
- Attend conferences, symposia, and other industry events to strengthen technical expertise and increase the visibility of the firm’s services in collaboration with applicable sales staff.
- Provide technical guidance, training, and mentorship to junior staff to support their professional growth within the discipline and firm.
- Review and, as assigned, supervise the project work of junior engineers.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Electrical Technology, or a related discipline.
- Certification as an Engineer in Training (EIT) or passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam in states where an EIT is not obtainable (within 18 months of hire or promotion or transfer).li>
- Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
- 5 years of relevant experience.
- Domestic and/or international travel may be required (10% or less). The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and project demands.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing electrical systems for water, wastewater, industrial, federal, transit, or other critical infrastructure facilities.
- Experience designing medium- and low-voltage power distribution systems.
- Experience preparing single-line diagrams, equipment layouts, electrical calculations, plans, and specifications.
- Familiarity with applicable industry and federal codes and standards, including NEC, NFPA, NESC, IEEE, and UFC requirements.
- Experience performing power system analyses using SKM PowerTools, ETAP, or similar software.
- Experience with construction-phase services, including submittal reviews, responses to requests for information, and field coordination.
Skills
- Advanced knowledge of electrical engineering design principles and practices.
- Proficiency with computer-aided design and drafting software and related 3D design tools.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary project teams, clients, contractors, and other stakeholders.
Pay
Pay range: USD $95,846.00 – $167,731.00. This range is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels for the geographic location assigned to the position. A candidate’s salary is determined by several factors, including role, function, relevant work experience, skills, required certifications, and education/training. All bonuses at CDM Smith are discretionary and may or may not apply to this position.
