Electrical Automation Technician II

About the role

Under minimum supervision, the Sr. System Technician repairs, installs, and troubleshoots electrical, electronic, and control systems used in a pharmaceutical/biomedical environment. Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on a wide variety of industry-standard and specialized equipment. Utilizes a Computerized Maintenance Management System (C.M.M.S.) to report and record equipment-related actions. Works independently or as a team member as directed by supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Assess and determine corrective action required when responding to equipment trouble calls.
• Communicate to relevant parties the status of equipment and time frame required to complete maintenance tasks when applicable.
• Perform scheduled and unplanned work on a wide variety of electro-mechanical controls used in manufacturing.
• Support new engineering projects and participate in the implementation of new projects and applications.
• Take necessary steps to correct or report equipment malfunctions or unsafe operational practices.
• Take a proactive approach to ensure equipment condition is maintained to original OEM specs.
• Work on short and long-term projects individually or as a team member as directed.
• Take necessary actions to ensure equipment and/or environment is safe according to local state code or governing policies.
• Run conduit, wire sizing, and pulling wire in accordance with N.E.M.A. code.
• Perform rewiring, power distribution, running new electric, installing electrical equipment, and all electrical work to national electric code.
• Train junior-level technicians.

Requirements

• Experienced in machine automation including robotics, PLCs, drives, motor controls, sensing components, vision systems, etc.
• Strong ability to communicate via laptop with machine control programs, PLCs, VFDs, panel views, etc.
• Solid ability to use RSLogix 5000, RS-232, Ethernet, DeviceNet, Siemens 7, etc.
• Ability to troubleshoot from electrical drawings and ladder diagrams.
• Strong ability to troubleshoot low voltage control instrumentation and components such as proportional valves, linear encoders, temperature sensors, servo controls, etc.
• Highly skilled in troubleshooting, testing, and interpreting electrical prints/drawings on low and high voltage AC/DC circuits.
• Strong knowledge of electrical theory, principles, and applications, and ability to interpret local and national electrical codes to help meet compliance/legal requirements.
• Highly skilled in troubleshooting electrical systems with minimal or no documentation.
• Proficient with the use of voltage, process analyzers, and other meters, and with power tools and shop equipment.
• Ability to interact with associates in a professional manner.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Positive attitude to work in a fast, team-oriented environment.
• Capable of lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma required.
• Vocational Training Certificate in a related field highly desired.
• Minimum 5-7 years combined experience/education working with electrical/mechanical systems used in high-volume manufacturing or related field.
• Hands-on experience installing, repairing, and troubleshooting electrical/mechanical systems on fully and semi-automated equipment.
• Equivalency: Depending on the area of assignment, directly related experience or a combination of directly related education and/or competencies may substitute for the stated requirements. Example: If a job level typically requires an Associate's degree plus 2 years of experience, an equivalent could include 4 years of experience or a Bachelor's degree.

Occupational Demands

• Work is performed in a manufacturing environment or warehouse with rotating shifts.
• Exposure to biological fluids with potential exposure to infectious organisms.
• Exposure to chemicals, electrical manufacturing equipment, hand tools, and moving machinery.
• Operates forklifts, tractors, and power equipment.
• Exposure to high levels of noise and to dust/gas/fumes/steam.
• Exposure to extreme cold below 32°F and, on occasion, extreme heat above 100°F.
• Exposure to vibration or oscillating movements of the extremities or the whole body.
• Occasional entry into confined spaces, requiring kneeling, crawling, climbing, and squatting.
• Works at heights on scaffolding and/or on ladders.
• Walks on uneven ground.
• Personal protective equipment required, such as protective eyewear, chemical suits, safety shoes and/or rubber footwear, gloves, hearing protection, and a respirator.
• Heavy lifting and carrying of 45 lbs. for up to 6-8 hours per day, with a maximum lift of 75 lbs.
• Work is performed standing, walking, bending, and twisting waist for 4-6 hours per day.
• Frequent foot movements.
• Occasionally reaches above and below shoulder height.
• Occasionally bends and twists neck.
• Frequent hand movements with simple grasping of one hand with the ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists.
• Ability to make precise coordinated movements of the fingers to grasp and manipulate objects.
• Hearing acuity essential.
• Color perception/discrimination, depth perception, and far vision correctable in one eye to 20/30 and to 20/100 in the other eye.
• Able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand; with the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken and written words and sentences.
• Performs a wide range of complex tasks.
• Adheres to a work schedule to meet production standards.

Pay

The estimated pay scale for this Electrical Automation Technician role based in California is $36.56-$46.67 per hour. Additionally, the position is eligible to participate in up to 5% of the company bonus pool.
