About the role

The successful candidate will be exposed to the many facets of construction, operation, and maintenance of the Electrical Distribution System. This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy challenging work outside of an office and want to develop communication, technical, and mechanical abilities. As a Ground Worker, you will develop skills that prepare you for potential advancement in Line-work, Substation, Design, or Dispatch areas.

The majority of the work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions and is considered "heavy labor." You must be willing and able to work up to 300 hours a year in overtime, with the ability to respond within one hour of a call for overtime strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide tools, materials, and supplies to journeyman linemen
  • Ensure safety rules and regulations are observed on the worksite
  • Drive trucks and ensure they are properly stocked and maintained
  • Prepare the equipment and worksite for the effective completion of assignments
  • Operate various types of equipment used in the construction process (diggers, aerial devices, etc.)

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age at the time of application
  • Must obtain a Class A CDL learner's permit within 1 month of employment and a CDL within 6 months of employment
  • Due to weight limits on equipment, a weight restriction of 290 pounds applies
  • Requires "recommended" test results from Modern Hire Electric Ground Worker Virtual Job Tryout (untimed, typically 45 minutes)
  • Requires "recommended" results from a pre-employment fitness physical assessment
  • Upon completion of pre-employment background and medical checks, the first day of work will be at the Training Center in Chester, VA, for a 4-week Ground Worker training program at Dominion Energy’s expense

Qualifications

  • Valid Driver’s License and 18 years of age
  • GED or HS diploma required
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds on a regular basis
  • Ability to carry up to 60 pounds
  • Ability to work on ladders and hydraulic lifts
  • Ability to be on call and quickly respond to electrical restorations
  • Ability to learn how to operate construction equipment and use hand tools
  • Computer application aptitude
  • Ability to work within a physically demanding work environment
  • A strong driving record that allows the candidate to obtain a commercial driver’s license by the end of the sixth month of employment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Class A or Class B CDL (Dominion will provide and pay for CDL training)
  • Class A CDL permit
  • OSHA 10 or 30 certification
  • Certification in CPR, First Aid, or AED
  • Previous experience working with mechanical or electrical concepts and applications
  • Background in the military (a plus)
  • Background in construction or related work environments
  • Background in working outdoors
