Responsibilities
- Maintains and cleans equipment, checking that it is working properly and reporting any issues to the supervisor.
- Performs routine EKGs on assigned nursing units and responds to stat requests as necessary.
- Affirms EKG tracings are appropriately labeled and checks their quality before giving them to the cardiologist for interpretation.
- Inspects the phlebotomy cart for expiration dates, adequacy of supplies, and fills out the daily inspection checklist before using the cart.
- Ensures proper patient identification by verifying the patient's ID wristband with the requisition slips.
- Draws blood from patients and transports the specimens to the appropriate laboratory section, labeling them and writing tests requested in a logbook.
- Records phlebotomy requisitions on appropriate log sheets (STAT, OP, etc.) and ensures complete patient identification on the requisitions including the diagnosis.
- Aids laboratory techs in receiving dropped-off specimens in Paragon, centrifuges the specimens according to instructions, and assists in maintaining the outpatient phlebotomy room and phlebotomy supply room.
- Stores the phlebotomy cart according to the numerical arrangement in the assigned storage room at the end of the shift.
- Answers phone calls received in the laboratory, places specimen tubes in the centrifuge, and alerts Med techs of STAT specimens.
Requirements
- EKG certification required.
- Phlebotomist training required for EKG/Phlebotomist position.
- Certification or competency from previous employer as a phlebotomist.
- One year of EKG and phlebotomy experience preferred.
- Heartsaver/CPR Certification preferred.
- Manual dexterity.

- High school graduate or equivalent required.
