About the Role

The EHS Specialist will assist in overseeing all aspects of health and safety for facility personnel by administering established health and safety initiatives. This is a great opportunity for those starting to grow in their safety career, with a safety-first mindset and a hands-on approach to addressing safety suggestions and concerns while leading proactive safety initiatives.

Responsibilities

Foster a safe work environment and lead by example, adhering to and enforcing all safety and regulatory procedures. At least 70% of time is spent in the production environment supporting a variety of EHS activities:

  • Managing employees' safety concerns
  • Conducting workplace inspections and risk assessments (new and updates)
  • Performing safety walks with different teams and plant leadership
  • Conducting contractor inspections
  • Performing programmed safety-focused audits
  • Managing change (machines, work areas, etc.)
  • Updating safety communications and contractor safety boards
  • Performing weekly inspections of hazardous waste storage areas
  • Conducting stormwater inspections
  • Signing waste manifests
  • Performing environmental/DOT training
  • Preparing and submitting required reports (monthly, quarterly, semiannual, annually)
  • Reviewing chemical approvals for safety and environmental impacts
  • Gathering and recording environmental data (e.g., monthly air emissions, oxidizer readings)
  • Periodically reviewing government websites for regulation changes

The balance of time is used for administrative tasks such as:

  • Leading the Safety Committee
  • Ensuring compliance with local authorities, regulations, rules, and codes, including interfacing with authorities and maintaining accurate record-keeping
  • Participating in corporate safety audits and follow-up
  • Ensuring accident/injury investigations are completed, identifying causes, and implementing preventive actions
  • Coordinating with Human Resources to develop, schedule, and manage required safety training
  • Supporting the development of plant and individual safety goals and gathering safety metric data

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Environmental, or a related field preferred
  • 1-2 years of related experience preferred
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Results-oriented with a focus on continuous improvement
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to juggle multiple priorities
  • Commitment to staying updated on new federal, state, and local regulations
  • Ability to work in a safe and ethical manner at all times
  • Regular interaction with local Fire, Police, and Medical facility officials

Physical Requirements

  • Physically able to conduct inspections and carry equipment used for inspections
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds at a time
