About the Role

The EHS Specialist function utilizes existing procedures and acquired knowledge to provide EHS technical support to the Plant through coordination of EHS activities and programs. This role supports the implementation, execution, and maintenance of the environmental, health, and safety systems for the plant. The EHS Specialist will work collaboratively with the Corporate EHS team, Plant Management, Production, Maintenance, and Engineering team members, focusing on various projects and initiatives within these teams.

Familiarity with regulatory requirements is a plus, particularly due to a large machine guarding project currently underway in Tampa. Hands-on experience with Machine Guarding, Lockout/Tagout, and Confined Space will be beneficial. Must be able to wear PPE, including safety shoes, eye wear, hearing protection in some areas, and long pants. The selected candidate can seek reimbursement for safety shoes.

Responsibilities

  • Practice safe working techniques and reinforce the safety policies, guidelines, and procedures as set out by the Company.
  • Review accidents and incidents, conduct field audits and reporting, and oversee EHS corrective actions.
  • Ensure the plant is current on all relevant Environmental, Health, and Safety documents.
  • Coordinate with Plant Manager, Production, Maintenance, and Engineering Departments on facility deficiencies through site audits and inspections.
  • Conduct audits to monitor personnel and workspace improvements.
  • Lead the plant’s EHS management system through proactive engagement with the location EHS program champions.
  • Facilitate periodic environmental, health, and safety management system self-assessments against Corporate EHS Management Practices and applicable regulations.
  • Ensure Corporate EHS management practices are embedded in operations and drive appropriate behavior.
  • Identify site-specific circumstances requiring changes to the EHS management system and enable successful implementation and sustainability at a local level.
  • Utilize the EHS Enterprise System (Gensuite - EHS) to record and analyze accident and incident records, making recommendations for corrective actions with an emphasis on proactive intervention.
  • Partner with plant leadership and operators to ensure the plant is free from risks to the environment, health, and safety.
  • Assist with new employee orientation and ensure completion of EHS training for all employees.
  • Partner with plant leadership to conduct timely, effective, and thorough accident and incident investigations to determine root cause and prevention measures.
  • Ensure findings from accident investigations, safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments are communicated to leadership and affected personnel.
  • Use data to recommend changes to training programs, SOPs, JSAs, and tools to prevent accidents and protect employees.
  • Work with Human Resources and Corporate EHS on Worker’s Compensation cases, ensuring alignment with company policy.
  • Coordinate with industry-related vendors and subject matter experts (SMEs) for EHS needs.
  • Support sustainability operations assessments within the plant.
  • Support implementation of health and safety training and records across the plant (Engineering, Maintenance, Admin, etc.).
  • Support plant leadership on capital project planning to align sustainability efforts with capital and engineering projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Science, Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Chemical or Environmental Engineering, or a related field (Required).
  • Master’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Safety Management, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or related field (Preferred).
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of work experience in workplace environmental, health, and safety program management (Required).
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, policies, programs, PPE, environmental policies (EPA), safety engineering, accident/injury investigation procedures, and operating rules.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with proficiency in MS Word and Excel.
  • Strong organization and time management skills, flexibility, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be a team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and travel for business as needed.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) (Required).
