EH - Nurse Clinical Practice Leader

About the Role

Direct supervisor for a defined segment of the population in a patient care or business area, including responsibility for daily clinical operations and people management within the Emergency Department at Exeter Hospital. The department cares for a diverse patient population with a wide range of medical needs, seeing approximately 33,000 patients annually. Nurses in this role possess strong clinical assessment skills, superior judgment, and the ability to manage challenging situations and set priorities while caring for patients of all ages in settings such as triage, critical care, trauma care, emergency care, and the Minor Emergency Care Unit (MECU).

Requirements

• 3-5 years of directly related experience
• RN License - NH or other Compact State
• BSN required
• ANCC Recognized Professional Certification required within 18 months of hire

Responsibilities

• Performs all duties of a Staff RN as necessary
• Provides anticipatory planning related to the needs of patients, staffing, and unit needs
• Supports the clinical and professional development of nursing staff through mentoring and role modeling
• Recommends specific programming to build the clinical skill set of staff
• Engages staff in clinical rounds and provides formal and informal educational opportunities to improve clinical skills
• Reviews and shares data on patient outcomes on the unit and acts as a liaison to the Nursing Quality Council
• Works with team members, manager, and physicians to review performance improvement indicators based on best practices and implements unit-based improvement initiatives
• Assimilates and applies research-based information to design, implement, and evaluate patient plans of care
• Supports staff in problem-solving, particularly with complex unit-based problems
• Communicates organizational information to all staff on a regular and timely basis; models excellent interdisciplinary communication
• Serves as a steward of resources: fiscal, personnel, materials, and time
• Articulates the professional scope and standards of practice for their area
• Manages human resources for staff, including evaluating, developing, addressing, and resolving clinical practice and/or behavioral issues impacting care delivery
• Assists with hiring and firing decisions
• Supervises daily work of unit team members to ensure proper clinical care, policy compliance, smooth technical operations, quality management (including analysis of Midas reports), and customer satisfaction
• Demonstrates clinical leadership skill and organizes, manages, and evaluates team function while maintaining a safe environment for staff and patients
• Provides input to departmental budgets
