Educational Assistant I, II, III - Castle High
This posting is for various Educational Assistant positions, with the authorized level being Educational Assistant III. Applications may also be considered for Educational Assistant I or II in the event of recruiting difficulties.
Pay
- Educational Assistant I, SR-10: $3,019.78 per month
- Educational Assistant II, SR-12: $3,260.76 per month
- Educational Assistant III, SR-14: $3,526.98 per month
The advertised salary is based on full-time employment and includes shortage and school year differentials, if applicable.
Examples of Duties
- Provide paraprofessional support by independently performing various academic, instruction-related support activities, tutoring students in specified areas as directed by the teacher, and observing and reporting on student progress and difficulties.
- Provide social, vocational, and daily living instruction to students with disabilities in school and/or community settings to enable independent functioning. Observe and report on student progress and suggest modifications to techniques and tasks based on prior experience.
- Perform assigned counseling support activities, develop rapport with students, encourage problem expression, observe and report on student progress, and carry out pre-approved activities promoting a healthy self-concept, social skills, and early identification of special needs.
- Provide articulation reinforcement lessons and repetitive drills to correct/improve speech sounds as instructed by the speech pathologist. May receive training related to common speech/language disorders and therapy methods.
Requirements
Education Requirements
Graduation from high school or equivalent and one of the following:
- Successful completion of an examination approved by the Hawaii State Department of Education (e.g., ParaPro or ParaPathways Assessment by ETS).
- At least 48 baccalaureate-level semester credits from an accredited institution, including 3 credits in mathematics and 3 credits in English.
- An associate degree or higher from an accredited institution recognized by the Department.
Experience Requirements
Applicants must meet the following experience criteria (one year equals approximately 180 instructional days in Hawaii):
- Educational Assistant I: No prior experience required.
- Educational Assistant II: 1 year of General Experience.
- Educational Assistant III: 1 year of General Experience and 1 year of Specialized Experience.
General Experience: Paid or volunteer experience involving direct interaction with people, demonstrating the ability to provide and elicit information, observe, evaluate, and report accurately on situations (e.g., serving on school/community committees, advising youth groups, or participating in parent/teacher/student meetings).
Specialized Experience: Work experience providing direct academic, personal, social, vocational development, or behavioral services to children, students, and/or individuals with disabilities, preferably in an educational setting supporting professional staff.
Additional Requirements
- Some positions require a current, valid driver’s license.
- Some positions require the ability to lift and carry up to 65 pounds and/or lift and carry up to 100 pounds with assistance.
Substitutions Allowed
- A Child Development Associate credential or completion of a related program may substitute for one-half (1/2) year of Specialized Experience.
- 15 baccalaureate-level semester credits may substitute for one-half (1/2) year of General Experience (max: 1 year).
- 15 baccalaureate-level semester credits in Education or a closely related field may substitute for one-half (1/2) year of Specialized Experience (max: 2 years).
- An associate degree may substitute for 1 year of General Experience.
- An associate degree in Education or a closely related field may substitute for all General and Specialized Experience.
- A bachelor’s degree or higher may substitute for all General and Specialized Experience.
- For high school graduates from a Department school:
- Completion of the Level 4 course in Teaching As a Profession (TAP) or Learning Support Professionals (LSP) may substitute for 1 year of Specialized Experience (max: 2 years).
- 1 credit for relevant work-based learning (internship, fieldwork, etc.) through TAP or LSP may substitute for 1 year of Specialized Experience (max: 2 years).
- Excess Specialized Experience may substitute for General Experience.
Quality of Experience: The required years of experience alone do not guarantee qualification. The applicant’s overall experience must demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position.

New employees can expect their first paycheck within the first 3 pay periods. Paydays are on the 5th and 20th (or previous business day) of every month.
Supplemental Information
- Applicants must meet all requirements as of the application date unless otherwise specified. Education and experience may not be gained concurrently.
- Experience is calculated based on a full-time, 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is pro-rated (e.g., 20 hours/week for 12 months = 6 months of experience). Overtime hours are not credited.
- Temporary Assignment (TA) experience must be verified via a TA History Report, supervisor-signed letter, or SF-10 Forms.
- Temporary positions may be extended year-to-year based on funding and needs. Temporary employees may gain eligibility for promotion, transfer, and other rights/benefits (excluding return/placement rights in a reduction-in-force).
