The Organization

Lighthouse Community Public Schools is an educational movement focused on disrupting inequities through exceptional educational opportunities for students in East Oakland. Founded in 2002, LCPS operates two high-achieving TK-12 public charter schools serving over 1,600 students.

The Opportunity

Lighthouse Community Public Schools seeks an Education Specialist (Mild-Moderate) long-term substitute to join their team. The ideal candidate embodies anti-racist education, cognitive engagement, and data-driven instruction, among other competencies.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Maintain a high level of rigor for students with disabilities
  • Ensure students are at the center of their own learning
  • Collaborate with other specialists and teachers
  • Oversee and implement behavior intervention plans
  • Demonstrate knowledge of IDEA and IEPs
  • Create and maintain student records
  • Communicate with caregivers regularly
  • Administer and analyze assessments
  • Grow professionally and contribute to the community
  • Coordinate Individualized Transition Plans (if teaching high school)

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.A. or B.S.
  • Valid California Teaching Credential or commitment to obtaining one
  • Certificate of Clearance verifying professional fitness for all CA teachers of record
  • Knowledge of California Common Core State Standards
  • 2+ years teaching urban youth with transformational results
  • Familiarity with educational platforms
  • Experience teaching in a progressive school model
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred

Environmental Requirements

  • Able to work in loud environments
  • Indoor/Outdoor adaptability to all weather conditions
  • Airconditioned and heated environments under fluorescent lighting

Physical Demands

  • See and hear on a continuous basis
  • Sit and stand for extended periods
  • Stop, extend, kneel, and reach
  • Lift up to 25 pounds
  • Walk for long periods of time
  • Move quickly or run over smooth to uneven surfaces
  • Supervise students outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Keyboard and whiteboard usage

Supervision

This position will report to the principal or assistant principal at their school site. It is a temporary 1.0 FTE full-time position starting July 27, 2026 and ending in December or January 2027 with the possibility to stay on in another long-term or building substitute role for the remainder of the year after the teacher on leave returns. Exact timing to be determined by supervisor.
