About the Role

Procopio is seeking a mid-level Associate with approximately 3–6 years of experience to join the firm’s Education, Nonprofits & Public Agency Practice Group. This is an excellent opportunity to join an AmLaw 200 Firm representing charter schools, early education providers, nonprofit organizations, public agencies, government contractors, and grant recipients in a sophisticated and diverse public interest practice that combines advisory counseling with litigation and administrative proceedings. The role is fast-paced and challenging, offering substantial client contact, meaningful responsibility, extensive practice development, and professional growth opportunities. This position may be based in any of our California offices, with potential flexibility for hybrid or remote work depending on the candidate’s experience.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have at least some exposure to California public charter schools, experience practicing law in complex operational and regulatory matters, and some experience in government litigation and administrative proceedings. The ideal candidate will also have some exposure to the California transparency laws governing public agencies and use of public funds, including Ralph M. Brown Act, Political Reform Act, Public Records Act, and TK-12 school funding.

Responsibilities

  • Counsel schools and other clients on a wide array of day-to-day legal issues, including researching, drafting contracts, policies, and other operational documents.
  • Assist clients in navigating sensitive disputes.
  • Handle litigation responsibilities, including writs of mandate, special education due process cases and other matters before the Office of Administrative Hearings, and other administrative appeals.
  • Balance a diverse practice, working on multiple client matters, and tackle novel legal issues requiring sound judgment and thoughtful analysis.

Requirements

  • California Bar admission.
  • Excellent academic credentials.
  • Exceptional writing, analytical, research, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a collaborative, fast-paced, modern law firm environment.
  • Self-motivated, intellectually curious, eager to learn, and motivated by serving mission-driven clients.

Pay

Typical salary range is from $165,000 to $235,000 depending on experience. This role is also eligible for performance-based incentive compensation, bringing the possible total compensation range to approximately $215,000-$335,000 annually.
