Editor, Chemistry

About the role

The Chemistry Editor at W. W. Norton is responsible for acquisitions of new titles and development of new editions for a list that includes successful undergraduate texts in General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and related subfields. This role is highly collaborative, requiring leadership, critical thinking, and complex problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Understanding the undergraduate Chemistry course markets in college publishing and the diverse, evolving needs of instructors and students.
• Recruiting, acquiring, and communicating with authors and other content contributors for a variety of print and digital editorial projects.
• Planning, developing, and implementing revision plans for successful titles.
• Soliciting feedback from instructors and students and incorporating this feedback into current and future editorial projects.
• Collaborating closely with colleagues in the digital media, project editorial, design, and production groups to ensure quality and timeliness of materials.
• Closely monitoring projects at all stages of editorial development and production with the help of an editorial assistant.
• Professionally interacting with authors, college faculty, and vendors, and effectively communicating ideas to colleagues including the college department editorial board and the advertising and marketing departments.
• Providing support for the sales effort.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree.
• At least five years prior experience in college publishing or comparable experience is required.
• A keen interest in understanding the teaching and learning needs of college professors and students.
• Superior verbal and written communication skills are essential.
• Proactive and innovative in a changing environment.
• Organized and detail-oriented, making sure that all aspects of daily activities are handled with accuracy and minimal mistakes.
• Willingness and ability to travel several times per year throughout the United States and Canada.

Pay and Benefits

Currently Available Benefits Include:

• Annual compensation for this position is $80,000-95,000.
• Gross annual salary range: $80,000 - $95,000.
• All salaries and salary ranges posted by Norton may vary depending on experience, skills, location, and like considerations.
