ED Professional Fee Coder (On-Site, Hybrid, Remote)

About the role
At NorthBay Health, the ED Professional Coder II will play a crucial role in accurately translating medical procedures and diagnoses into ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes in an accurate and timely manner. This person is a dedicated, knowledgeable individual with a strong understanding of medical terminology, coding guidelines, regulations, and proficiency in utilizing an EHR/encoder system. They will effectively communicate with providers via email, query, phone call, or in person to educate or discuss coding requirements. The role involves abstracting demographic and physician data to meet both internal and regulatory requirements for reporting utilizing the hospital’s abstracting system. Work focuses on ED using the approved classification coding systems to include modifiers. All work must be carried out in accordance with the rules, regulations, and coding conventions of the AAPC/AMA CPT Guidelines, AAPC/AMA, American Hospital Association (Coding Clinic), ICD-10-CM CMS, HCAI, and NorthBay Health coding guidelines.
Responsibilities
- Translate medical procedures and diagnoses into ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes accurately and timely.
- Communicate with providers to educate or discuss coding requirements via email, query, phone call, or in person.
- Abstract demographic and physician data to meet internal and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Assign physician E&M levels and apply appropriate modifiers.
- Adhere to coding guidelines and regulations from AAPC/AMA, American Hospital Association, ICD-10-CM CMS, HCAI, and NorthBay Health.
- Work independently and collaboratively in a team environment while managing continual deadlines.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent (preferred).
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS-P) certification.
- CEDC certification strongly preferred.
- Five or more years of continuous coding experience in a professional fee setting within the last 8 years.
- 1-2 years of ED coding experience.
- Extensive experience assigning physician E&M levels.
- Experience with an encoder and CAC system preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and coding classifications (ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS).
- Understanding of the clinical content of a health record.
- Proficiency with PCs, Cerner, and/or other computer systems and programs.
- Comprehensive understanding of insurance requirements and compliance guidelines for Medicare, PHP, WHA, Medi-Cal, Worker’s Compensation, and Commercial Insurances.
- Ability to work remotely with self-discipline and withstand pressure from continual deadlines.
- Technically savvy with the ability to learn software and troubleshoot equipment as needed.

Remote Work Eligibility
This position is open to candidates located within the continental United States, excluding Washington, Ohio, Wyoming, North Dakota, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands due to state-specific employment requirements and workers’ compensation regulations.
Pay
Hourly Salary Range: $42.24 - $51.34 (offered rate based on years of experience).

Compensation Structure
NorthBay Health uses a structured compensation framework. Staff-level positions use a step-based system (Steps 1–5) based on years of directly related experience, with Step 5 representing 20 or more years of experience in the role. Manager-level and above positions are paid a fixed annual base salary and are eligible for a variable incentive compensation plan. Physician compensation is structured based on specialty and role requirements.
